"Yeah, uh uh" and its social importance

Sometimes, you don't notice something until you miss it. That's how I realised how strange it is when people just remain silent when you're talking.

There's this lad I study "Philosophy of Psychology" with and, since we have some interests in common (Linguistics, for example), we talk about it. He's very intelligent and it's nice to talk to him, but there's something weird about it.

He's got a very strong sense of "turns": When it's his turn to talk, he will talk; whenever is someone else's turn, he won't say a word. I never realised how strange that was until now - when he's speaking, I give signs saying that I'm interested, such as "uh uh, yeah, o rly?", but he doesn't say a word when I'm speaking. Even in class, he doesn't he talk unless he's asked to talk (although he does raise his hand and patiently waits until the professor allows him to talk). The fact that he looks just like Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) doesn't make things less strange :D

'sike... yeah, I miss the filler words :p

It's probably strange because most people aren't active listeners.

ooomg i know EXACTLY what you mean. A friend of my old roommates' came by to visit..and I was talkin to him...same exact thing. There were more awkward silences in our one conversation then i have ever experienced throughout my whole life.

its a cultural thing also (i have studied about it)

i have a bad habit of finishing people's sentences when they aren't talking up to my speed. i get impatient. i mean, i dont do it in a bitchy way, but i don't like to watch (and wait for) people struggling in trying to figure out what they're saying.

so i guess that's a sign that im listening.:stongue:

i'm worse, i dont even complete the sentence, i just reply to it before it's done (sometimes i even skip that one and reply to that sentence's inevitable reply). :o

I often do the same, Slylee :p

Yeah, I'm aware of it, but this is why I was confused at first: this "silent" behaviour is not common here in Brazil.

Actually I think it's the opposite: it's probably strange because most people aren't passive listeners :p

But, in that case, I'm reading you, not listening :p

Sometimes.

I'm silent when people speak I nod and that though. And I really, really, really hate being interupted when I'm talking. No higher form of disrespect in my opinion.
