In Germany everyone going to school has to learn english for at least five years, so everyone here understands and speaks english quite good.
BTW: Someone said that only the younger germans speaks a litte bit english. Obviously this person has never been to Germany since, like I already said, everyone learns english in school (since the end WW2 they have to, before that they had to learn Latin and French), and the older (today really old people, who went to school before WW2, learned it when big parts of germany were occupied by the americans and the british. |
yea, but still...I go to Germany around 2 times a year and people merely speak German, since they just don't know how to start an English convo....it's rather sad I think. I wish the German TV Industry would recognize the problem and start putting subtitles instead of putting German voices over the original vioces! :) |

Btw. It is "so everyone here understands and speaks english quite WELL"
You ask...why is it well? Because how do they speak and understand english....they speak and understand it well....well being an adverb...
unless of course you want to say the speak and understand it goodly ;)
my 2 cents for the day

P.S. At job interviews the first impression besides your dress is...how are you today? Good thanks....(wrong) How are you doing?....you are doing well.....not good...jeez...if only people would notice their idiosyncrasies ;)
I suck at spelling ...and I may be wrong about this grammer, but am pretty sure it is right :) |

But there are lots of latin words in english. Many more than in Swedish and other germanic languages I think. That may have something to do with the west part... beats me. Youre probably right..
I agree that dubbing must have a negative effect on english learning in the countries that use it. It also spoils the films. I remember seeing "The Mask" with Jim Carey dubbed, while on vacation in Germany. That was a very unpleasant experience. |

| English is Germanic, it falls into the Germanic Language group, the latin that is used in English is only for mainly complex words, the majority of English is Anglo Saxon (Germanic), and words have been taken from the French,Gaelic (Irish) only for names of places and simple words, and the Greeks (mainly medical terms) and they make up around 20% of the English language about 70% of it is Germanic :). |

English is a Germanic language... and to be honest it's a bit of a 'bastard' language, because it draws on many different 'dead' languages...
I think the reason most people in Europe speak English is because their governments place high priority on learning foreign languages. So they are forced to learn it at school. English is such a necessity in the world of business that it would probably hurt a country's economic development if they didn't speak English to a high standard.
Unfortunately, our ty government in England places little importance on learning foreign languages, because most people just assume someone will speak English wherever they go. Which is so damn ignorant and gives us people that make the effort to learn foreign languages a bad name! It really annoys me when I see someone speak English to say, a Spanish person expecting him or her to understand.
However, what I find most annoying is when I go to a foreign country and the locals assume because I am English I can't speak their language and so they try talking to me in English. The majority of the time, I can speak their language much better than they can speak English! It just makes me feel like I wasted 4 years of my life at university!
Anyway, enough ranting (for now!!).

Well, as a non-native English speaker myself, I can tell you English is pretty easy to learn.
Much easier than, say, Russian or German, which are very difficult! and somewhat easier than French and Spanish, which are relatively simple but still have some verb inflections. |
