question for the computer wizzes
View this Thread in Original format
why can't i view certain images when surfing the net? sometimes images do not load in my browser...they just appear as blank boxes with a smaller box containing an "X" in the upper left-hand corner. most times i can "right-click" and "show picture" but alot of times the image just will not load. why? (by the way, i'm using IE)

oh yes...i'm still looking for the answer to my other question about internet explorer that i posted earlier. thanks.
Cuz the link to where the image is supposed to reside is broken...

Otherwise if the link is ok then assume that you're low on memory on your machine and your browser is skipping those images as a result...it happens... especially when u have 20+ IE windows open like I usually do

Let me correct you, Swamper (OMG, am I really doing that?:)
An image cannot result in the bllank square with the red cross inside due to deficiency of memory. what MSIE always does in such cases is ".......crash............." The only reason for such squares is a broken link. Also, (like it sometimes happens with the banner exchange systems), the link is correct, but temporarily the server, which serves the image, is down, which also reults in that box.
You can try to fix that problem by uninstalling/reinstalling paint from add/remove programs in your control panel. Damn tech support job....! hehe
Peace,
Steve :D
I don't see any way this can actually help. The browsers have the image interpreters built-in and they don't call the other services, like paint, to show the images. As for me, when doing a custom installation of NT, I always check not to install paint and wordpad, because noone will use them anyway. But it doesn't mean that if I didn't install paint, there will be more images that won't be shown.

And I state again:
THE ONLY REASON FOR BLANK BOXES WITH RED CROSSES TO APPEAR IS THE BROKEN LINK

Ahem :) Not the only reason. Although it's pretty rare, it's easy to create invalid img-references. Just make the img-tag point to something which is not a gif/jpg... for example a bin-file :D Some crappy http-servers/links can also make the stream trashed which makes the image file unreadable by the browser although it seems to receive all bytes. This may also occur if the server fails to send proper MIME-type headers or the connection to the server takes so long time that the browser decides it has timed out (this happens usually with geocities :D)

Are you on dialup? on a really slow interent connection at times the browser will time out the operation if an image takes to long to load. This could happen if you were trying to tranfer a page with a lot of pictures or other data over a slow conection such as dialup.
