Mastering Sets

Hey guys,

After recording several sets into my computer, I have noticed that the sound quality is somewhat soft and muddy. I am looking for a way to either master the recorded set with a software based solution or find a recording hardware solution. Any suggestions as to how I should improve quality of my recordings?

Thank you!

Note: I am recording into my laptop's integrated soundcard, which is somewhat adequate. Also, I am mixing records and cd's through a pcv 275.

I forgot to mention that I am currently using Sound Forge as my recording software.

Search the forum for this, especially the DJ Booth forum.

Secondly, if it's muddy lower the freqs around 250 hz a tad. At least I think that's the 'muddy frequencies'.

what you can do is find what you think is the "crappiest sounding track" on the mix, and set up a multiband compressor (maybe an eq, too) to clean up all the bad sounding parts of that track (at least, for the most part). take the above example... if you set your low mids bandwidth to 2-300hz at a 3:1 ratio... this will kind of the solution you're looking for.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Erm, if the recording is muddy you arent recording it properly. Dont use EQ to fix bad recordings. Excessive and corrective EQ can make things sound unnatural.

What hardware are you using to record? You need a preamp, since the signal from a dj mixer without on board pres is not hot enough at line level. You will end up applying a load of post gain which will make the end result sound hissy and blurry and well...crap.

There you go, i just learned the hard way about onboard soundcards. Just put my old SoundBlaster live back in here, it sounds 100x better then the onboard.

Yeah JustinMead is right on there...
Onboard sound card sucks... it happened to me too

i went for hardware recording solution for a while until i upgraded my soundcard

Yea, that sounds like it would be a major contributing factor to the problem. Thanks again.
