[Review] Tiesto at Avalon 5/13/06 In Search of Sunrise 5 North American Tour

Wow, what a night! Pulled into the parking lot across from Avalon at 9:30...there is no signage at the entrance, but see a sign far off into the distance that says $30!!! Went into reverse and got the hell out of there, but I wonder how many cars get stuck in there and can't get out. Not posting the price at the entrance should be illegal, and if it is then I say we should report any parking lot that does it!

After parking in an $8 lot and walking two blocks, I was astounded to see the line for tickets going far as the eye could see down to the end of the block! My friend was sick and couldn't make it for Tiesto, so I was hoping to sell my ticket for what he paid for it to another TA who was in line. Walked to the end of the line which was around the block and halfway down the next street, but no TA's...where was everybody?

Found some random person in the line and got the $60 back, then headed to the other side and braced for another huge line to get in. Then the doorman says "Everyone back! We're only letting in those with hard tickets right now," so I show my ticket and I'm in, like in 3 seconds!

Of course, there's nobody in the club because everyone's in line outside, so I headed upstairs and watched a webcam pointed at the DJ booth on a cool LCD TV for awhile. Andy Moor's "Halcyon" was the first song I heard Boris play, so I knew it was going to be a good night! :)

Before I know it, the floor is full and I start dancing up front. Ran into Gypsygirl, who told me that she had requested "Without You Near" and Boris said his partner would be singing it live on stage at the end of his set. A little after midnight, there's this guy on stage singing "Without You Near!" Also a Markus Schulz sighting backstage, guess Avalon was a warmup for Spundae!

Three "men in black" bodyguards start walking into the crowd and moving everyone back about 3 feet from the stage, when a wall-to-wall curtain drops and "In Search of Sunrise 5, Los Angeles" is projected onto the curtain. Soon after, I caught a glimpse of Tijs behind the curtain, and the crowd totally went into a frenzy, "Tiesto, Tiesto!"

The curtain lifts, and Tiesto starts his set, I think it was about 12:30 and he played until 4 a.m. Tijs looked really happy to be there, and a guy in the crowd was saying that he had flown to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami to see Tiesto in Concert, and was now back here in LA from Hawaii to hear him again!

His set was really good, I remember hearing Super 8 vs. DJ Tab "Helsinki Scorchin'", "Flight 643", a remix of Bronski Beat "Smalltown Boy" that really went off with the crowd, and his last song was so amazing! (need to find out what track it was, anyone?) There were a few songs with weak vocals that I could have done without, but overall solid tracks and his mixing seemed well done for the most part.

At one point, Tijs looked at my shirt like he was trying to figure out what it said. Then a huge smile on his face when he realized it was one of his Tiesto in Concert shirts! Almost like a mini "Tiesto in Concert," there were acrobats on each side of the stage twisting around in the air and floating around to the beats.

No encore at 4, but that was probably because he wasn't closing and Victor needed to start on time. Victor played "Without You Near" and I left soon after since my feet were like baked potatoes. My only regret is that I couldn't go back again tonight, but I know it will be excellent as well! Would like to see some reviews from Sunday to compare.

:wtf:

well then post yours clovis, you know you were hiding in the shadows you closet tiesto lover :D

so my friends and i get there around 9:30 and the line to buy a ticket is so f-ing long and i was so glad i got pre-sales and a hard ticket. see the san diego crew and line and stop to say hi and then they started letting the hard tickets go right in. very nice. i get to the door and ask what is the difference between general admission and vip, since i spent the extra $40 on vip like a dumbass, and the guy at the door says, express entry. wtf????!!!!! :whip:
my 2 friends had general admission and got in the same time i did. ing avalon!

anyways, go right to the bar and visit with the few TA's that i see there. pick a spot on the floor and catch most of boris mds set. i have to say this set was much better than the one when he opened for armin back in october. for some reason he left the decks for a moment and was on the side of the stage so i ran over and asked if he was going to drop without you near, b/c yes, i still love that song and he said absolutely and that his partner was going to "sing it live". i was like, cool. moments before the track was dropped i see markus schulz walk in so i walk over to the side, again, and said hi to him and asked "aren't you supposed to be spinning at spundae right about now?" and he told me he was closing so i knew right then i wouldn't be seeing michelle :p hmmmmm...... i wonder if she hadn't seen tiesto the night before and seeing him the next day how that night would of played out and where she would have gone???????

so then tiesto gets his big to-do set up with the dreaded black curtain. so then the curtain goes up and the crowd becomes instant idiots b/c their "god" is in front of them. i have read numerous slams on tiesto on various topics but i tried to go into this evening with an open mind and judge for myself. i thought he was good, not great but good. didn't seem to trainwreck too much. a little progy at the beginning and i have to say the last hour he stepped it up a bit and got harder, darker and deeper and i thought for sure he would keep going past 4 am but victor took over around 4:10. okay, so i've seen him, i don't think he is worth all the money that is demanded for his shows but it was definitely entertaining. the lights were amazing at avalon, the dancers and acrabots were cool and the crowd wasn't so bad. several people stated that this was not his best set and robert told me that mexico was just amazing so maybe he used up all his greatness on friday/saturday morning. oh well......

victor's set made the evening though. i have to say from the first track on he had the crowd in the palm of his hands! i heard rumblings from many people about how they would hate to close after tiesto and man, victor is gonna have to step up to the plate. but i don't think they had any idea just what he was about to unleash! i mean:
mixing: perfect
track selection: amazing
energy behind the decks: overflowing
crowd interaction: excellent
the anticipation for each drop into the mix: worth the extra $40 i spent on the that damn vip ticket.

so thanks to victor's set the night was pretty great! he is has definitely arrived and settling nicely into becoming not only so cals favorite dj but becoming a top dj all over.

the night ended at 7 am and said my goodbyes and caught a ride to bob's with some very random people i had never met before. good thing they were cool and didn't cut me up and put me in their trunk.

:p

from there it was on to the hollywood canteen to catch some house music and then in bed by 9 pm sunday evening. so needless to say i'm brain dead today. but good times, fun but can't wait for lawler!
