MANUMISSION´S MONDAYS ARE GONE!

We caught up with Privilege(d)´s manager, Manuel Lopez, to know more.

Julie Bates writes:
With a 10,000 capacity Privilege is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest club. Privilege is famous for its circular DJ booth, which hovers over the top of a large swimming pool, for DJs playing beats in the bathrooms, and its theatrical Manumission parties on Monday nights. However, due to internal problems this past year, the club’s legendary Manumission parties will not take place and have been replaced by a new event called Home.

With such a huge capacity and massive events to plan Privilege relies on a capable, experienced manager to make sure everything runs smoothly and that man is Manuel Lopez. The Voice spoke with Manuel to get insider details on the cancellation of Manumission and what’s in the bag for 2006!

How did you become the manager of Privilege?
I simply have been in the right place at the right time. When Juan Medrano decided to leave Privilege Sr. Echaniz (the big boss) offered me the job. It’s a big step for me but I am doing my very best. I also got a lot of support from the crew I am working with and I thank them because they had a lot to do with the chance I’ve received.

What does that feel like?
Well, first it’s a job for me, like any other job. On the other side, being offered this job was a dream come true for me as I have been working in the nightlife business for 15 years. For example, I was the promotions and events manager at Germany’s biggest venue from 1991 until 1998. Being manager here at Privilege brings a lot of responsibility with it. But I am a visionary and a fighter and I am doing my very best to improve the image of Privilege again.
Manumission will no longer take place at Privilege on Mondays. We know there were a lot of internal problems over the past year. Can you tell us more about that?
Manumission decided not to do their show on Mondays this season. As you might know, they also have a contract for the Friday night, so they will have a new night but I let the primer to Andy Manumission to reveal his summer plan… Monday nights will be replaced with an event called Home, a mixture of burlesque, erotic and artistic shows and a good UK-focused DJ line-up. Something real fresh and new and I believe it can become as strong as Manumission was. More infos will be released soon.

Are you pest about it? Do you think the Friday will work? As Ibiza Rocks wasn’t really a success last year… Seems so weird to cancel such a legendary party…
Well I am confident Andy will come up with something interesting and successful as for Manumission on Monday nights, I think changes are healthy for the club and the scene in general... Our new Monday night will be awesome... So no I am not pest.

What kind of parties and DJs does Privilege have planned for this summer?
First I want to speak about our opening party which will be something really special this year. Apart from countless shows, artists and fireworks that we usually have at the opening we are very happy to announce that you can see Europe’s biggest laser show and live TV from other opening parties in Germany and the Ukraine, where another Privilege has its opening party the same night. Also, from midnight until 6am the sound of Privilege will broadcast on BigCityBeats all over Germany. This is how we will create the first multinational opening of the world’s biggest club and the press interest is very high on this event.

I am also very happy to announce that we are continuing Meganite now in its third year. Meganite was founded by Mauro Picotto and me in 2004 and it is really exciting to see how the night grows and grows. Compared to 2005 we have five new nights and now finally offer music styles for everyone. John Acquaviva presents Acquaholic every Tuesday, a fresh and cool night with electro sounds for real cool people. He will have well known guests like Sharam Jey, Christian Varela, and John Dahlback to name a few.

On Thursdays we welcome back Alex Gold with Xtravaganza. After a serious accident he finally made it back to Ibiza and we are very excited about his cosmopolitan dance night. Saturdays will be hosted by Silicon, a very successful night from Barcelona. Their concept is very glamorous, stylish and polysexual and for sure will be a happening itself.

On Sunday we welcome Chris Liebing, who now has his own night called Spinclub. Held in the backroom of Privilege (La Vaca), Chris’s intention is to create an underground night for the raw and undisputed techno lovers. He also offers quite an interesting line-up.Apart from the new nights that I already told you about we have installed a new sound system, Funktion One, which is one of the best companies on the planet. Their system provides high class club sound and we are very happy to offer this to our clients.

Buy it from Beatport.comWill there be live performance artists including, fire dancers, jugglers, and dancers as there have been in the past?
Yes, Privilege will offer more shows and artists, depending on the night and the concepts of each promoter. Julio and his crew will take care of this and we can expect a lot from him as he is very well known on the island and has worked for different clubs in the past decade.

Tell us about your involvement with Chicaria Records and any remixes you plan to release.
Honestly there is not so much time I can spend on Chicaria Records. But it’s still the little baby of my friends Marcello Marchitto and Michael Holle and me. Founded about four years ago we constantly released tracks. Until now, we have about 25 releases and are getting known on the international market. Just now we released a new production of my friend Lars Schneemann and I, it´s called Schneemann & Lopez “Do What We Do” (released digitally on all big download portals). Marcello Marchitto now stays in Ibiza all summer to make new connections and productions himself.

Yea it looks like they still have the friday slot, but from the article I don't get the impression that Manumission is simply moving to Friday. Rather it looks like they will develop a whole new event for Friday. Hopefully it is as amazing as we all know Manumission Monday's were.
