Lordi

It's like Finland's version of Gwar! This gets a big WTF.
Eurovision: Mixing music with politics
Annual song contest is 'like the Olympics, but in music'
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- There was good news at the Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday for a Bosnian songbird, a Turkish diva, an Irish crooner -- and a lurid heavy-metal band that declared: "It's the Arockalypse."
Ten competitors advanced to Saturday's final of the venerable international pop competition, including Turkey's Sibel Tuzun, Irish singer Brian Kennedy and Bosnian band Hari Mata Hari, led by "Nightingale of Sarajevo" Hajrudin Varesanovic.
In total, 24 contestants will vie for top honors in Saturday's final.
A surprise finalist in Thursday's contest decided by viewers' phone and text votes was outlandish Finnish rock band Lordi, whose "Hard Rock Hallelujah" brought a dash of the demonic to the good-natured contest.
The group's selection as Finland's official entry sparked debate in their homeland, with some questioning whether the mock-Satanic rockers were the best possible ambassadors for the country.
Finland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ireland, Sweden, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Turkey, Armenia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia garnered the most votes and advanced from the semifinal. Thirteen other countries were eliminated.
The 10 join Greece, Switzerland, Moldova, Israel, Latvia, Norway, Spain, Malta, Germany, Denmark, Romania, Britain, France and Croatia in Saturday's final showdown.
Viewers tuning in to Thursday's semifinal were treated to an over-the-top extravaganza from the opening number -- a medley of past Eurovision hits performed by figures from Greek mythology.
For half a century Europeans have embraced the glitzy, kitschy Eurovision contest, a place where nations battle for pop supremacy and musical tastes collide. And there was good news also for Americans -- the event is soon to be replicated on U.S. television.

Eurovision is a big deal overseas.

Israel had a winner a few years ago that was a transexual/ drag queen, Dana International, w/her song "Viva la Diva". Lordi makes that look 'normal'.

Gwar you say?
Now there is a name I haven't heard since I was 12. My cousin used to listen to them and my mom gave him royal when he tried to introduce me into that world too at a young age. |

2 x-mas's ago when we were in DC, we took Graham to a Gwar show, and deliberately didn't tell him who they were in advance. Just moments b4 they got on stage, Graham asked "Why is the club covered in plastic?"
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! |

Israel has an interesting representative this year too: a black guy.
And not Ethiopian immigrant black- an American black man. Turns out his family immigrated from Chicago to Israel when he was young. Now that's something you don't see every day...

Spain's entry has a ridiculous band name, but when you read the story behind it, it only makes sense.
behold...
Las Ketchup
Their song is titled "Bloody Mary".
Hailing from Córdoba, Las Ketchup are the four daughters of El Tomate, the Flamenco guitarist.
All four of them are young, attractive and friendly. And all four of them have rhythm coursing through their veins, as you can tell by their songs and performances.
Their first CD was called ‘Las Hijas del Tomate’ (‘The Daughters of Tomate’). And just a week after its release, their first single ‘Aserejé’ went to number one in Spain.
You gotta wonder how long the tomato themes will go on for.... |
