I knew jp sucked and it was confirmed tonight... so many shirtless deca filled guidos kept piling in the vip area without bracelets that i just left my table, went to the basement and roof floor where the house djs played better music and had a much better time there...wasted nearly 200$ on my cut for the table, would have had more fun spending $ jsut for cover

Hmmm... exactly... let's hear some reviews. I know JP might not be the greatest DJ, but he's still got a few things going for him. Anyway, I'm back home in Syracuse so I missed this one --- let's hear how it was.

Believe it or not I have a strange respect for JP in that he's been around for so many years and yet he still manages to throw "profitable" parties in NY. I'm not a fan of the style of music he plays at all, but there are obviously plenty of people who do so I guess he's laughing all the way to the bank.

Here's my ONLY gripe about JP, and all of this is true from first hand observation. I you not, he brings with him 2 Macs (1 laptop, and one desktop) using only god-knows-what type of programs. He also brings with him some vinyl,CDs, effects boxes, some kind of looping device, and even a SOUND TECH GUY who hooks this stuff up in the most inconvenient and inefficient way possible. Both times he played at Avalon, he didn't want me to open and didn't want ANYONE to open for that matter, which was fine by me b/c I knew he was bringing in all his fancy equipment and I'm sure he didn't want anyone to touch it. Totally understandable......But here's my main question......Why bring all that stuff and even a PERSON to hook it up for you if you aren't gonna put on some kind of "live show" or do something totally unique? It just seemed like the same tribal track playing for 4 hours straight with the occassional vocal loop and ill-timed filter effects. From an experienced DJ's point of view, it just seems totally unnecessary. Any DJ can achieve the same result with a few tribal CDs, some accapellas, and a cheap pioneer mixer. Now that I really think about it, it's quite confusing. To put this in perspective, I helped set up Junkie XL's live show at Avalon back in 2004 and all he brought with him was a mac and a synth.

Believe me, I'm not trying to be a cynic, a JP hater, or a smart-ass. But can someone please enlighten me as to why a DJ that plays the style of music that he does, need all this equipment? And you know how your typical non-electronic music fan who calls it techno would say that "every song sounds the same"? Well in JP's case I can honestly say, every song sounded the same to me! I honestly could not distinguish one song from the other and was even more perplexed at how it took $15k worth of equipment to acheive this.
And for the last time, I'm not a JP hater and I'll even reiterate the fact that I respect the guy.....But can someone explain any of this to me? What is he doing back there that he needs all of this equipment? Does anyone see or more importantly, hear him doing anything special to the music?

Oh, and if anyone wants to copy this to another JP thread where someone might have an answer for me, feel free.
