Hair straightening?
View this Thread in Original format

My Asian gf wants to have her hair straightened, and i was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it? There is a place in Toronto that does Thermal Reconditioning, and they're asking about $500. Another place in Pacific Mall also does straightening (Japanese Straightening?), but only wants $200. That's a pretty big difference. We're tempted to go with the $200 place, but it'd suck if we found out that there's a catch when its already too late. Can anyone help?

permanent hair straightening is EXTREMELY harsh on the hair...it will cause it to break and dry out...

but if she's doing this no matter what...don't get it done at the p-mall (i am just saying this out of a bad hair experience there lol)..If you go to a well known hair salon, the chances are it will be a better outcome, because most of the professional ones actually care about their customer's hair. It's gonna be worth it in the long run to go with the more expensive place. thats just *MY* opinion though :)

Don't Asians have straight hair anyways? (I'm being serious)

I've never heard of Thermal Reconditioning, but I've had my hair Japanese Straightened in Oct 2003. I had it done by my cousin in the states, and he only charged me 1/2 price (full price runs around the $500 mark). If a place in Pacific Mall is only charging $200, then that's a really good deal, cuz it takes several hours to complete the process (but then u gotta wonder if you're in for a really bad outcome if you get what you pay for). Thing is, with this process, it has to be done 100% properly. If she's colored her hair at all, she's not a good candidate for the process, unless she wants her hair to turn to 'glass' and break.

Unless the price has dropped dramatically in the past couple years- call around to some other reputable salons and compare prices. Also ask which product they use to do it, and see if you can find out which is the best one on the market. Honestly, I could never pay full price for that here (with 15% taxes on top).

Most asian girls go for the Japanese hair straightening over here....it's more suited for their hair types.

DO NOT get the one made for african americans.....I got that once when I was younger and it ruined my hair.

My advice is for her to do it herself with a professional ceramic straightening iron. I have had the japanese hair straightening done and found that I had similar results doing it myself. I use my iron all the time now. Just make sure that it's a professional salon quality one (not a crappy drugstore model).
