IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen (nickname "WiZ") in late August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in Bitnet Relay Chat which operated on the Bitnet network.
IRC gained prominence when it was used to report on the Soviet coup attempt of 1991 throughout a media blackout. It was previously used in a similar fashion by Kuwaitis during the Iraqi invasion. |

Thats what I always loved about DALnet...
I dont think you could protect nicks on EFnet? Am I wrong?
There was another net that many of us in Collingwood (esp the one highschool) chatted on back in the day, but you couldnt protect nicks, which i hated about the server! :whip: |

Not wrong, EFnet has no nick protection which sucked for someone like me because loca was taken 99% of the time :whip: |

that just means you arent very original. ive never had a problem with people stealing my nick since i started on irc back in 1993 or so.
