I'm not into alot of conspracies.

But this one i am pretty sure about:

Our town lists all the things that are being voted for in the newspaper. Like, fire department funds, road maintainance, etc. But the thing is that it's listed in the back page of the newspaper, in the classifieds, in the smallest print. I personally think this is done so people don't see it, and they won't vote.

Wow, that sounds like a great opportunity, such experience can come from that! What organization are you in?

Knowledge can only go so far. I would much rather have experience! :gsmile:

I've just finished my Teach English as a Foreign Language certification through i-to-i who also provide many volunteer and conservation projects for its students. I'm also looking into the many options available on http://www.volunteerabroad.com/search.cfm

I haven't joined anything as of yet as i'm keeping my options open, i land in Santiago de Chile on August 1st where i hope to get some paid English Teaching for a few months (and become more fluent in spanish) before heading up the continent to more impoverished nations where my skills as an IT Professional (the most meaningless bull job available in Australia) can help those who need it more. :)

I'm going to guess it has more to do with the law actually.

I know when it comes to opening a new business, you are required to run the name of the new business (the DBA, "Doing Business As") in the tiny Classifieds section of the paper for a certain amount of time in order to allow anyone who has a problem with you using that name to come forward and contest it.

Who knows; Maybe in your area (all areas for all I know), ballot issues are required to be run in the paper so that it can't be argued later that the info wasn't avaiable to the voting public.? The fact that it's in small print wouldn't be surprising either if this was the case, as this would be purely for legal purposes that these ads are run...and fine print is almost always used where it's a matter of meeting some legal notice requirement.

Right, small is cheaper, and usually legal notices require a lot of text....

Has anyone taken speech lessons for public speaking? What's that like? Because I have a feeling I am going to be speaking alot in my life.

^^ Yeah i've done a course on public speaking, it's a good way to practice in front of like minded people until you posses the skills to do it in front of any crowd

Yes, its good. Depended on teacher of course.

My speech teacher was an ex-US Congressman so it was very good, helped me a lot.

Public speaking comes naturally for me, so when I took my speech class in college I didn't have to do hardly anything and aced the class.

I'm not as active at the moment as I would like to be, but that's going to change. I used to attend town meetings all the time, but that was a couple years ago. I've been kicking around the idea of going back to school to get a degree in political science, so eventually I can become one of the s that screws over the little guy with all kinds of rules that I won't have to follow.

I have been really active the last year, to promote the yes for the European Constitution.:(
