Sasha Plans Live DJ Mixes
On-site concert recording and distribution provider Instant Live has teamed with British electronic DJ/producer Sasha to release a completely live, legally sanctioned DJ mix. The two-hour-plus, two-disc set will be recorded June 24 during Sasha's Fundacion residency closing party at the Avalon club in Los Angeles. Upon exiting the venue that night, dance/electronic enthusiasts can purchase the CD and take it home with them.
This partnership marks the first time that Instant Live will work with an electronic artist. Instant Live has recently worked with the Allman Brothers, the Cult, the Dears and others.
Also of note, clubgoers that have experienced one of Sasha's Fundacion residencies in the past two years know that the DJ prides himself on merging rock sounds with contemporary dance/electronic beats to create on-the-spot remixes (mash-ups, if you will). Because of this, according to a statement, Instant Live will pre-license all the music in Sasha's record/CD crates, so that every artist, songwriter and label is properly compensated.
The gear-savvy Sasha calls Instant Live "an amazing advancement in the use of technology." He adds that the dance culture, like it or not, was built on bootlegs and now downloads. "Instant Live allows me to put my sets directly into the hands of the fans while supporting the music makers…This music has always been about immediacy." With this, "it really is here and now."
Instant Live GM Stephen Prendergast echoes this sentiment, adding, "At Live Nation/Instant Live, our intent is to develop a legitimate business model for DJs, labels, publishers and the creative people who derive a living in the club and dance world."
The limited edition Sasha/Instant Live collection (10,000 individually numbered two-disc sets) can also be pre-ordered through instantlive.com and djsasha.com. Remaining sets will be distributed, by Ryko, to brick and mortar retailers in mid-July.
Sasha's June 24 Fundacion event at Avalon in Los Angeles brings his two-year-old, multi-city residency to a close. Fundacion's "closing party" in Los Angeles will be preceded by Fundacion "last calls" in New York (June 9 at Crobar), Wash., D.C. (June 10 at Glow at Fur), and Denver (June 23 at Vinyl). Artist/label guru James Lavelle will be Sasha's special guest on all four dates, while DJ/producer Satoshi Tomiie joins the lineup in New York. |

| absolute brilliance. i can't imagine any true fan walking out of there without a copy. this is the kind of innovation the recording industry needs. |

This is such an unbelievable idea, I love it
Another byproduct of this will be lower cover fees becuase the club & dj have an alternate source of revenue :) |

This reminds me a little bit of when Pearl Jam released the album from every single show they played on their tour a few years ago, except much more efficient.
What a great idea!
I can't think of how many times I would kill to get a copy of a set I was at.
Its going to be great for fans, and great for the DJ's and producers as well since it is another way for them to get revenue.
Hopefully more people follow suit and it becomes more common. |

I've been trying to think of how to do this for a while now! I thought it would be great for smaller DJs as on the spot promos.
I just wonder what the turn around time is, from the end of the set to when you can actually pick up the cd.
Just love this idea. |

what i think is truly amazing about it is they're going to pre-license Sashas music crates. that's insanely cool and probably an even more insane feat. i'm not really sure about the legality of just selling a mix without the licensing.
i'm guessing they will have a few of those huge multiple cd makers & just pump out a ton within several minutes.. wonder more about how they are going to 'master' it. |
