Firstly, its not soccer, its football, AFL is not football, u can touch the ball with ur hands, u can catch the ball, which somehow defeats the purpose of calling it football imo.
secondly, i dont believe the AFL has an expiry date as such, BUTT, the way things are going with AFL, its becoming less and less of a spectacle each year, blame it on the 2 or 3 rule changes that occur every year, blame it on how week in week out the umpires enterpit an offense completely differently, or the tribunals inconsistency, or whether is just that AFL is starting to become more and more like netball. It is just not the spectacle that it was years ago, and you only needd to listen to the talk back after the games to realise that people arent following the AFL like they used to.
As for the REAL Football,u cannot compare the sport in general to AFL, its so much more tactical, the people running it are not ruining in, by trying to fine tune it every 6 months with new rules and its not a sport, football is a religion. I pray to see the day where it becomes more popular than AFL, i dont see it happening though, for this to happen the Australians have to become acustom to what the game is about, evidently after being at the greece australia game, they are a very long way away from that, hearing the australian supporters Boo, when the ball was being passed back, its hideous, if people actually knew about the game, they woudl realise the concept behind the passing back, creating space etc etc. I guess these next 2 years will be very important for both codes here, with the world cup on over the next month, the A league taking off like it did in its first season, then with the asian cup qualifiers coming up over the next 6 - 8 months, then the asian cup, its bound to generate more and more interest in australia, because australians are sports mad, and australians will support there country. Slowly slowly the narrow minded comments like andrew demetriou's comment the other day "ohh yeh they had 95,000, well 2nite we are hoping to have 60,000 and maybe more than one goal will be scored, have to be erradicated because the probably doesnt realise that half the nation wont be watching the AFL in a couple of weeks in order to get sleep to wake up in time to watch the World Cup
World Cup = The Most watched sporting event in the world
Ok there are my 2 cents worth on the Football vs AFL debate.
ps: Rugby is just plain , and not even worth a mention |

i dont see how you can argue soccer has more tactics than AFL. but i agree, rugby is pretty .
soccer > gridiron > motorsports > AFL > rugby > being raped > cricket. |

hahaha. um, yeah. RUGBY league has more in common with gridiron than it does RUGBY union ;)
