System Soundbar Rant

I really wanted to see John Graham last night at System but I didn't quite make it. I got there at 1 AM to find that the cover was $25 and not the "scaled cover charge" as System stated! Either way it didn't even seem busy so I made a decision and decided to split. For me, that's just not worth it.
A few months ago I didn't mind shelling out $30 to see Nick Warren at System because he's a world-class DJ & producer, but $25 is just pushing it. System should at least be clear when advertising/promoting these events and charge $20 if they advertise $20. I can't remember any specific venue but I know System has done this before when they've had guest DJs and I've still paid the inflated cover charge  just because there's nowhere else to go. It just seems like they're cashing in when they have guest DJs because their regular nights are empty!
When I go there I feel sqeezed (and yes..pun intended - the place is way too small!). They just don't seem to value their customers. At least the Guvernment practices what it preaches (you always know how much it will be before you go in).
However, System can justify having higher cover charges than a place like the Guvernment because of their smaller capacity but squeezing an extra $5 or $10 out of their patrons is just bad business and unethical. They should be focusing more on bringing in more international talent instead of how to make a few quick bucks.
I'm looking forward to the new Friday night at Koolhaus, and although initially it won't be a regular night, I'm hopeful that it will catch on and replace Breathe as Toronto's Friday progressive house / trance night.
I'm not starting a petition or anything like that because frankly it's a waste of time and won't go anywhere. I just won't go to System anymore. Unless System changes their highway-robbery policies and brings in some big name DJs, I won't be attending this club anymore. I want to give it another chance so I can see Mauro Picotto but I don't think anything will change until people stop going.
Had to get it off my chest... :D |

I faced the same problem last night, for me unless its a superstar DJ, system can go themnselves...not even the bastards at guvernment do that. |

Not to sound rude or anything but if you wanted to get in cheap why didn't you go before 12 ? I was there at 11:45 and me and the chick I was with got in for $15 each (I guess we had enough blue for the bouncer ;)) Overall i had a great time, I can't say that the music was the best i have heard from Tilt and Quivver, but there were a few good tunes. I tried to find other TA's but either they weren't around or I didn't look in the right place cause i didn't bump into any. I did find the crowd at System to be much better then Guvernment though, quite a few friendly faces and the vibe was excellent...I guess it's the small club vibe which i have missed for quite some time. |

I dont think you could get any more internationally well known talent than Tilt & Quivver definitely big name dj/producers as im sure many of the older TA's will know that they are responsible for gettting many people into the scene ie:RM's Children nuff said. I dont know what superstar dj you are expecting to see in system, like clearly the bigger the star the more impossible it becomes to organize and handle ie Digweed, like dream on he could fill the ACC alone. And you said you wouldnt pay the cover well there was plenty of advertising goin on in the forums here, so had u read that you would have worn some blue to knock the cover down, i wore some blue and got in for 10 bucks no problem. I had an awesome time as it was my first time at System. The Vibe was awesome and people were there for the music(although some didnt even know who was spinning at times lol) Tilt was very friendly as was John Graham, and i was able to get a couple of my vinyls signed=),and Mark Scaife was well... Mark Scaife played a sick ass prog set in the beginning and a superb banging hard trance set toward the end. I think the best thing System can do is the get the up and comming talent rather than some big name hint hint James Holden,Hernan Cattaneo to name a few. Next week is Cass who is a top producer in my eyes and Chris Fortier who is remixing the next Bedrock album in May so I think System is doing a superb job of getting in respected talent. Thats all i have to say for now.
cheers!

what do you suggest system do? bring cheesy djs like judge jules and fergie on a plate for you? System Soundbar is the best thing to happen to Toronto since who knows when. None of that cheese, and a great vibe (& crowd might i add). If you got in before 11:30 they would have charged you ten bucks. And why not charge 20$? System is not a big club, how else would you want 'em to make any $$$.
Guvernment is undoubtebly (with the exception of koolhaus on some occasions) horrible on it's saturday nights. The crowd is full of attitude, and not a lot of people know their music... |

Maybe I wasn't too clear on my original post. Whenever I've gone to System (and I've been going semi-regularly for about 1.5 years or so), I've had a pretty decent time. I like the fact that they bring in up-and-coming djs but what irritates me is how they consciously keep their prices ambiguous to their patrons. They do it because they know they can (at least for now).
Like I said before, I didn't mind paying a little bit more to see Nick Warren because I can justify that once in a while (I know that happens sometimes and you have to pay a little bit more) but people paid $40 to get into System that night (after 1 AM). That was never advertised in their flyers or on their website. It's like being pick-pocketed and knowing it...Doesn't that bother anyone?
This is not a System vs Guvernment thread. They're both different. They both have their pros and cons. In terms of what I'm trying to say, the Guvernment is the lesser of two evils. They're the most successful club in Toronto because they don't dick people around at the door ($10 b4 midnight, $15 after) - it's been this way as long as I can remember, even when they have special events.

$25? Holy, you were right about not paying?
I got in for $10, but then i was decked in blue.
AS for being squeezed, yea once the music got going people filed up towards the front, just in front of the dj booth. I was there at the time, and didnt really think much of cuz i mean c'mon, it happens EVERYWHERE. I made do with my space, and the smaller it got the more i figured its time to stop for a rest.
I've never had a problem w/ space @ system, ther's always spots to be filled in somewhere on teh floor. The great thing is that system's audio is great everywhere on the floor, well balanced. The bass could be a upped a little more at the back but still, very very well layed out.
I had fun that nite. But i couldnt relate to any of the dj's on name basis? i didnt know who was spinning when :(. That black Dj (was he black?) was crazy tho! Some sick beats. |

WhAt?! What "up and coming" dj's?? ALL the DJ's that Breath brings in on Friday nights are WORLD CLASS, top notch, amazing headliners. Breath educates all of us with every Friday night that they have bringing in such amazing DJ's and Producers, you don't even understand how lucky you are to have the talent you do in Toronto on Friday nights, if you are into progressive there is probably no other city in North America besides maybe New York and Montreal that can rival what Breath has on Friday nights, and for $25 thats not bad at all to hear what you get to hear on a Friday night in such an intimate venue for the most part.

Clubs are a business, you have to remember that. They need to make money to stay in business and keep improving things. The guvernment can afford to charge the cheaper cover because they make up for it in the crazy amount of people that go through the door, where as System is a smaller club so in order to keep things at such a top notch level it's going ot be a little more because theres 2000 less people. Personally, I'd rather pay the extra $10 that seems to be the issue here and goto a place that is a lot more friendlier and educates me by bringing in DJ's/Producers that noone else probably will. |

It May not be a System Vs. Guv thread... but breathes resident night is $10 b4 midnight and 15 after too.... It's only when they bring the best of the best do they charge $20 b4 and $25 after......
Mick Wilson opened the set, Mick Parks (Black Dude) played in between and QuivveR (John Graham) closed the night :) |

Then i got the black dude(Mick or Mick lol) to sign my Odessi-Moments In Space vinyl.
