Serato Question (Cart's/Stylus)

I've posed this question to a few SSL users and I am yet to find an answer, so here it goes...
If using Serato Scratch Live, connected to two turntables, mixer and laptop, would it matter on the quality of Cart/Stylus you were using? Or would it be just enough for the cart to read the Coded vinyl's grooves?
Theres no point in me buying Ortofon Nightclub Pro's when I can buy Numark Groovetools....
Ortofons or Whitelabels are gonna look better on my Techs than Numark GT's, but hey... Money is money. |

Serato recommends using the Shure M44-7's due to their high output. You can use any needles you want, but the Shure's are recommended and are way cheaper than the ortofons!

have the same thing bothering me.
since im planning to get stanton st150 tt's ill just make use of the included 680hp and when they die ill go for the shure m44-7. buy yeah, high output is better for SSL. m44-7 has about 9 mV, while most carts (like Ortofon, Stanton etc) have 3-7 mV. :) hope this helps |

| On top of having high output they hold the goove better than most any other cart on the market. |

I use the shures also with serato also. Not only for the reasons above but also because the low wear. For them to stick well i only run about at about 2 grams. Less weight equals less wear on the record. This is very important since you use the same record over and over with serato. And like others have said they stick like glue even at the low weight settings.

| Using serato for about as long as it has come out i feel i can give some advice on this. If you just going to be using serato then get the best tracking carts you can. This is why rane sugests the shures. They are designed for scratch djs and thus have excelent tracking on the record making sure that when scratching they will still pick up the timecoded signel. I personally use stanton 500-II becouse sometimes i have to use origional vinyl and they still have excelent sound quality with great tracking. Theirs really no need to get any great sounding needles if your just going to be serato becouse either way the sound output will be that of your recorded file so it is in my opinion best to get the best tracking needles you can get. Just my 2 cents |

Ortofon have just released the digitrack which is designed specifically for use with serato, fs etc. The reveiw in IDJ this month says that its supposed to pick up 90% of the time code information compared to 60%-70% for normal needles

Im not convinced myself that youll get that much benefit for the extra money, my fs works fine with my knackered old Numark CC-1s. |

Although having said that, didn't we notice a big fluctuation in what FS thought the pitch was when we were using it at yours a while ago? Could that be due to the needles/amount of timecode data picked up rather than the quality of the software? |

Was that before christmas tho, cause i got a new pair of fs vinyl which has significantly reduced that. Im not saying that it wont perform better with better needles, just that Im not sure that the perfomance can be increased so much as to justify spending that much cash on a pair.
Im quite willing to to give them a go if you wanna buy me a pair tho stu :p |
