Bassline in A?

| I'm having a hard time making my bassline sound low and thick in A major without it sounding like someone taking a crap. Any suggestions on how to make basslines more *versatile* along the keyboard. |

Are you saying that a A-tone is too low-pitched? In that case, use another key?

try to use a higher tone from the scale to make your bassline
A Major is: A,B,C#,D,E,F#,G#
Who said you have to use root note as your bassline? You can use Cis for example or higher... |

| Well said booster. Also, if yourbassline sounds too "farty" try tweaking your synth patch as well. That can help as well. |

I'm sorry...all I can think of is the brown note from South Park! :-P
But anyway, I would advise that if you don't want to try a higher note, also try adding a sub-bass, and mixing it almost 50/50? ...I am just throwing that out there off the top of my head, that would be my first method and then I'd go from there. |

Ok I've uploaded a sample. First half has a generic v-station bassline on D. That's kind of what I'm going for. The tonal shift is from D to A down....sounds like someones taking a crap...then I raise it one octave...which loses that oomph. Any suggestions?

I heard it and I think it sounds fine. Just like it should. The high part at the end is too high but I think you were just showing how you can't raise it an octave, right?
Anyway, seriously... Are you using monitors to listen? It sounds great. |

Another technique is to have the bass's envelope release be extremely steep so it doesn't have a tail. That way everytime the kick hits, the tail won't still be lingering.
I don't know if that was a very clear response...I can explain if it was just confusing though. |

Yep, that could be it. It's usually called Key-track/K-Track or KBD.
I sometimes make the second osc of the synth one octave higher or lower, and then adjust the level of it until the whole bassline sounds balanced. |

it's a common problem mate,and yes the keyfollow will help with the higher notes but you also need to compress it to reduce the difference in peaks,try to set the treshold to the lowest(quite)peak!
