So my family and I have decided to take a vacation to Europe this August.

UK, Amsterdam have already been figured out....but what I need help with is finding a nice place in Greece.

I've seen tons of pictures of beautiful beaches but we're looking for a nice area that isn't too touristy with nice, clean, beautiful beaches (tropical preferred :tongue2) where you can still visit some of the historical sites. Anyone care to help?

Thanks bunches for the help!

The islands are beautiful that for sure but are also very busy in August, not to mention extremely expensive. If you do decide to go to any of the islands i would recomend Corfu or Lefkada (on the Ionian Sea) I believe its possible to drive to Lefkada as its joined with a bridge or an underground tunnel. Crete would also be a great destination as its much bigger then any of the other islands and so would not be as busy. I would suggest staying away from the Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Ios, Syros, etc) if you're looking for some privacy. Those will be insanely packed and super expensive. Crete will also have some archaeological sites you would check out.

Now i would recommend staying on mainland Greece. The northern part of Greece (where i lived) has lots of beautiful beaches and tons of historical sites. There is an area near Thessaloniki called Chalkidiki. It is a very popular area with super sweet beaches. Its made up of 3 legs. The first leg, nearest to Thess, is a very touristy area with tons of clubs, cafes, beaches, etc. The 2nd leg is alot more relaxed, more of a family oriented area, but also with very beautiful beaches, etc. The 3rd leg is known as Mount Athos. It one of the most sacred areas in Greece, with 20 or so Monestaries. Unfortunetely its of limits to women.

There are tons of areas within a few hours of Thess that are awesome.

If you want to go to the south part of Greece i would recommend Peloponnese. It is the area in the very south of Greece. Beautiful beaches, more relaxed, tons of historical sites (Sparta, Olympia, Ancient Corinth, etc).

If you need any more info let me know. I can send you some pics from either of these areas.:D

Yeah it's a tough call between Chalkidiki and Peloponnese...my friend told me to go to Chalkidiki, he said it's the least touristy spot of them all :)
