i dont even know where to begin with how stupid these people are...
| quote: | About 80 anti-poverty protesters tried to disrupt opening night at the Stratford Festival on Monday.
Participants from the Perth County Coalition Against Poverty and the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty banged on drums and heckled the well-heeled theatre-goers attending the black-tie gala in an attempt to draw attention to poverty in Ontario.
Organizers had warned that the demonstration would be much bigger, predicting that 400 people would be on hand for an attempt to shut down the Shakespearean theatre festival for the evening.
About 300 police officers were on the scene to deal with problems. They staffed a kilometre-long fence surrounding the theatre. Protesters, shouting slogans such as "Make the rich pay," gathered by the gates where theatre patrons entered.
The protest was largely peaceful, with only a few runs at the fence to keep police busy. There were no reports of arrests.
The curtain rose without a hitch on the evening's play, Coriolanus, which stars Colm Feore and Martha Henry.
The protesters were calling for the Ontario government to raise welfare rates, increase the province's minimum wage from $7.75 to $10 an hour and reinstate the special diet allowance.
They said previously that they chose the festival's opening night because it usually draws prominent politicians, business leaders and celebrities. Last night's attendees included former Ontario premier Bob Rae and Karen Kain, chair of the Canada Council for the Arts and artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada.
Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson told the London Free Press that he thought the protest was misdirected. The prominent festival provides many jobs in the southwestern Ontario community, he said. |

these idiots want mimimum wage to be $10 an hour? Why? So that inflation will be at 30%? I think these idiots need a lesson in economics.
Also, protesting at Stratford is only going to damage their cause. The last thing people care about when going to a shakespeare play is some idiot begging for handouts.
More welfare? Um no, how about you get a job... |

The problem with OCAP is ironically similar to the problem with corporate leaders. When OCAP looks at workers, they see factory workers. When the coporate leaders look at the economy they see big business as the engine. Both are wrong. Small business drives the economy and hires the majority of workers. A $10 minimum wage would be death to many small businesses. Can you imagine paying $10/hr for someone to work the till at any craft related retail store? They have a tough time making money as it is! It would go under in a month.
In my experience, most people with OCAP have no concept of economics, and have no interest in ending poverty because it would take away any justification for the government funding that they receive. They're just perpetuating the cycle. |

If only they realised that the rich give so much in taxes and charity contributions already! Plus, the majority of rich people (i know) have worked their asses off, going to school, and getting a good job. Every rich family I knew grew up, was lead by hard working parents, who deserved every penny they earned. |

Ding!
We have a winnar! :D
I'll never understand the arguement of higher min. wages when essentially they're the ones driving the business they work for, out of business!
If they want higher wages, they need to learn to invest in themselves and not look for handouts.
With handouts come expectations of more handouts which in turn, quashes any inititive they may have had. |
