Master Tempo on CDJ's

| I read that the master tempo maintains pitch of the track even when you change the speed. I thought pitch = speed. Please explain this to me in noob terms. :) I'm not understanding its function or why its useful. |

speed = tempo (how fast the song is playing)
when you move the pitch slider, the way the voices/instruments sound also changes. If you move the pitch up to 50% on a hip hop track, it will sound like chipmunks talking. Keeping the master tempo on keeps the voices normal, but it still speeds up the track. |

+1, I never use the master tempo on my cdj-1000mk2's. even though their the best master tempo on the market. |

Well that's not totally fair... the mater tempo does cause artifacting, but only if you try to speed a track up more than you probably should anyway...
Realistically you'll only be pitching up or down 5% for most trance/house. In that range master tempo doesn't affect the sound quality much (if at all, I certainly can't tell).
I don't really use it much... though it can be useful for keeping things in key when harmonic mixing.

| I wish there was a way to bend half the % in master tempo and the other half by normal pitching (or is that too weird?) |

Yes that's weird :)
For Ableton peeps, the tempo control in ableton is essentially ALWAYS master tempo. They have a separate pitch control for keying up and down.

For that try using virtual dj...sounds like even pitched (tempoed) up a little. |

Traktor's highest-quality timestretching algorithm sounds pretty good to me, even if you stretch it quite a bit. Can anyone here show me the error of my ways, tell me it sounds horrible, etc? ;p

| I never use it beyond +/- 3.5% as I can usually hear a slight difference. Sometimes it also messes with the kick above that % and makes mixing a little harder... |
