need some advise on HDD/CPU config.....

ok, i have never purchased a 5400 RPM HDD, and i really dont want to, but this is a special situation.... I am, as we speak (or type) looking up parts for my new computer and there will, for sure, be a few HDD's. I am thinking maybe a 60 or 80g 7200 "main drive" but then maybe a bigger (120 or so) 5400 g drive for archiving and such, just mp3 storage and basically storage of all that .

Now the question for people with 5400 rpm drives.... will I be able to play videos (all formats including VOB,) mp3s, games, etc??? probably not games but just curious. I just want to know if it will severly slow things down (or even not work to play those files) or not be a big deal if I only use it for mp3/video...

thanks everyone!

-Marc

The thing with 5400rpm drives is that they load a bit slower and u can't watch movies on them..but for the storage,no problems!
Im gonna get 2 5400rpm 120gb and raid them...
SmellsExcellent
would i be able to play MP3s off of one?

I'm using a 5400 RPM 30gig HDD.

You can listen to mp3s, watch movies, and play games.

Games just take a little longer to load but thats my only complaint about it. Everything else is fine.

What the hell you talkin about?

A 5400 RPM HDD works just fine......You'll be able to play anything and everything just like on your main HDD. The difference in HDD speed between 5400 and 7200 isn't really even that noticable. The only time you'll notice any difference is when doing large transfers, like copying 10 Gigs to another HDD for example. Infact, last week I just installed a Western Digital 100 Gig 7200 HDD on my friends comp. Works great. I am going to invest soon on a 160 Gig 5400 HDD......You can get a 5400 160 Gig for about 300 dollars... or you can get a 100 Gig HDD with 7200 RPM for about 250 dollars. If you ask me, the deal is the 5400 160 HDD for just 50 more bucks. Thats 60 more gigs for a speed difference you won't even really notice, ESPECIALLY if you are just using it for storage. Anyway, this isn't input from someone who has "read articles"....this is what I have noticed from hands on experience and installs.

/me to the rescue.

With the platinum all you get is the control box which is overpriced. For sound card, I suggest you go with the Philips Acoustic Edge (which I have :D )... or if you're not planning on playing too many games, go for the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Both really good cards, especially when compared to the Audigy. If you want to save some good dough, get the Acoustic Edge as an OEM if possible. The version I bought (which should be the same in the US), is:

-the card itself
-1 year warranty
-audio cables
-driver cd
-brief manual

If you need further info on sound cards or speakers... check out:
3D Sound Surge

Register into the forums and ask what sound card they recommend for you, and mention what your uses for it will be.

Hope that helps.

lol, forgive me if I sounded rude. I didn't mean to. But you should be able to do pretty much anything you wish with 5400 RPMs....

El~Zapo: thanks as well, it is a sweet card.. i found one for 57 bucks!
