I liked that extra year.
Felt much more prepared to venture off on my own in uni with it.
I support it and think we should stil have it around (as an option like it was before for those who wanted to take advantage!) :) |

I didn't ask if it was a good thing or not, I asked who implemented it? I actually wanted to know which government was responsible. Again, instead of answering a question in a straight forward matter, you try and push an agenda.
You think it was a waste of time? Have you seen any of the serveys of first year uni student comprehension levels? Have you talked to any professors in uni in the last 4 years? Have you talked to any high school teachers about it in the last 8 years?
Please talk to the educators about it being a waste of time or not. They will tell you that the four year system eliminated a lot of essential material for post secondary education (mainly math). The number of tutorial, extra help sessions (in uni and college) has increased since the elimination of OAC.
I completly saw the value of OAC. I was happy that I went through that system, as it actually gave me time to grow as a person, let alone learn. OAC was much more than about just material, it was about age and maturity level. |

it's another topic, but I couldn't agree more...dumbest move ever.
this legislation is, IMHO, clearly shortsighted and will prove ineffective on it's own.
but...I'd also like to see stats on the % of people on welfare who don't have a high school education, for starters. It's hard enough to earn a living out there...but when you don't even obtain a BASIC education...
let's also assume that parents are playing less and less of an active role in their kids lives...don't we have to target kids themselves if we're to keep them in school instead of trying to go after absent/uncaring/busy/whatever parents?
so if not the driver's license...what? it's easy to bash the legislation...but let's hear some alternative initiatives. |

Maybe I just got a good set of teachers, but we were treated completly different in OAC. The same teachers gave us so much more freedom and autonomy. They gave us first year level work, and expectations.
When I got to first year, I had no problem adjusting to the work load, or difficulty level. I had a much harder time with the transition from 12->OAC. |

I'm totally for this....if kids want to drop out of high school for a no good reason then they should lose their license!
I don't know how work permits work in Canada....but in the US they are trying to push it so kids who drop (without a legitimate reason) out lose their work permits along with their license. I think it's a great idea....maybe dropping out of high school and working at Burger King wont be so tempting. |

My understanding of the legislation is that there are exceptions available if the child's withdrawl from the education system was necessary for economic reasons. |
