Armin van Buuren vs. Chris Sheppard

This'll probably be a thread mostly Canadians get, but here goes anyways...
So, who sees some striking parallels between the two:
-Both gained fame as DJs in growing party scenes of a certain style of music (Armin-trance; Shepp-techno), tapping into a popular sound that everyone enjoyed.
-Both also gained fame with a 'pirate' radio show.
-In their respective countries, their fame grew exponentially, to the point where everyone knew them and their next compilation/DJ mix was highly anticipated.
-Their early productions, while not normally groundbreaking, were still enjoyed by many.
-As time went on, their styles became more and more mainstream.
With these similar paths, one wonders whether Armin will eventually go the complete route Shepp did, becoming a mainstream radio DJ akin to DJ Scribble while making light-weight pop dance music for the masses.
Of course, I doubt Armin will ever get Don Cherry to guest 'rap' on a track. :wtf: |

It was on one of the old Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em videos. It had a whole bunch of BKS and 2 Unlimited tracks as the soundtrack, which was done as a bit of promotional plugging for their albums since they were all on Quality Records & Video.
It's hilarious seeing Cherry going around in some faux-warehouse rave, with Shepp as the DJ. |

They are nothing alike on that detail.
Armin not producing any huge groundbreaking trance tunes?
Are you serious?
He produced loads of huge tracks. For uplifting trance he was easily one of the top producers.. IMO the top producer.

Perhaps the reason his productions nowadays are so lacking is because of being too busy. I remember a time where I looked forward to any AVB production that came out. These days I hardly even want to bother listening and when I do it's with low expectations. |

| Chris Sheppard was the man who basically pushed the Toronto scene to a wider audience (1992, he brought Moby and Ritchie Hawtin in as deejays for a party). His pirate radio show pushed dance music to a wider audience in Canada. He may have disappeared from the mainstream public view in the last few years but what he has done for dance music in this country is huge and he's often laughed at and forgotten, which is sad. I doubt you could lump him in with Armin because avb showed up at a time when dutch producers were really gaining a forefront in music. He's pushed his own sound to a wider audience but him and shep are really different and their contributions to music have happened in two different ways. Its like comparing apples and grapes. |
