Hurricane season is here and the message remains the same: Be prepared for the worst.
But this year, the tone has changed. Government officials from President Bush to local emergency managers have stripped away the sugar coating:
Failing to plan could kill you.
"No more coddling,'' said Larry Gispert, Hillsborough County's emergency management director. "We're telling them the first 72 (hours) are on you. The laggards need to wake up and be ready to take care of themselves."
That means having enough food, water, emergency supplies and medicine to last at least three days.
Don't expect the government to provide for your every need within hours of a hurricane hitting.
The aggressive approach was prompted by last season's heavy death toll and the obvious lack of preparation by people in South Florida for Hurricane Wilma.
"No government on Earth can adequately respond to a natural disaster if the people are unprepared," Gov. Jeb Bush said at his annual hurricane conference in May.
Gispert said he's been banging his head against a wall for more than 20 years to get people to stock up on supplies and come up with an emergency plan.
So many people demand smaller government and less taxes, Gispert said. But when a disaster strikes, they scream for government to supply their every need.
Bush emphasized at his hurricane conference that aid and workers will still pour quickly into disaster areas. But it's a "lot harder when people line up in their Lexuses and Mercedes to get ice and water at a public distribution site when the Publix is open a block away," Bush said.

LOL at the rich people comment, I never got that. You'd see hummers in line to get ice and water, yet, the Publix right down the road from house had plenty of it. I hate cheap s. |

I never understood people in Florida not being prepared for a hurricane. To me it seems like common ing sense. I mean if you live near the coast its not a matter of if you are going to be hit but more like WHEN.
The other thing I will never understand is when you see on the news some guy is standing out in front of his shack that sits 2 ft. above sea level and he is on there saying 'I'm staying put right here, I can ride this out' while a Category 4 storm is bearing down on him. I dunno if thats some kind of dick sizing thing where they are trying to show how brave they are or what. But really it just shows how stupid you are. |

But that's ok because two canadian forces chinooks will be in the air doing the work of fourty black hawks. ;)
Reminds me of my politics teacher who always laughed at americans because he came from a poor country in south america that gets hit twice as hard by hurricanes but never took as much damage because they built some primitive walls thousands of years ago - and yet the american levis fail. :p |

i think that's funny but it's not like we had a HUGE disaster.. it's hard to have things stocked up when your with out power for fuking 2 weeks ... you know ICE does melt.
i don't think ppl with lexus + mercedes were going for the food they were giving out or maybe even the water. We all seem to stock up on that but i think ppl needed ice which is why they went.
what an idiot. |

I personally knew some people who did that, that's why I thought it was funny haha. But yeah, it is common sense living here to prepare for hurricanes...I never understood why people never stocked up on stuff. |
