So Im planning a trip to Puerto Rico with some friends of mine. We were looking for something not too expensive but kinda exotic and came up with Puerto Rico. So, for those with personal experience, what town should we stay in and what is there to do there? What are the good, reasonably priced hotels? Id rather spend my money getting myself and some girls drunk than on a luxury suite.

My family lives in PR, went there last summer for 2 weeks.

Some things to do:

- Old San Juan. Lots of bars, clubs, nice dive bars and small shops. Great little art galleries. Make sure you check out one of the two forts, Cristobal or El Morro (the bigger one). Between the airport and old san juan is a strip of beach that is lined with the bigger hotels(ritz carlton), casinos and clubs. We stayed in the Sheraton in old san juan and it was relatively cheap and we got upgraded on our hotel room (just ask for an upgrade). Make sure you get some mojitos in a dive bar.

- Bacardi Factory right outside San Juan is neat and free drinks.

- El Yunque. The rainforests are awesome. Great hiking trails to the top of the mountain. There are little castles and forts up top and a nice waterfall.

- Culebra. Island off the east coast with ferries going to it daily. Can rent boats, jet skis, etc on the island. You don't need a car. Some of the best beaches on the planet in the top beaches guide. Great snorkling.

- My family lives in Aguada on the west coast. Out there is some awesome surfing(in winter months) and amazing snorkling. Camuy, Aguadilla, etc on that area have great snorkling. We rented cabanas in Camuy for a few days on the beach. Was sick.

- Areicibo. The huge radio dish. We didn't go there but a lot of tourists do it, but its kinda pricey.

- Explore the other cities like Ponce some of which have a great art feel. Don't forget to eat a lot great food is everywhere. Make sure you stay away from the americanized places and look for good local places. There are guides on the internet.

There are tons more things to do but when Im in PR I like to snorkle, sit on the beach, drink, and relax.

i've been, but only to san juan. there were people having sex on a bench and narrow streets inhabited by tourist shops and millions of stray cats...

lots of stray dogs too, especially the more rural you get! Nothing like being awakened in the morning by roosters and dogs howling.

Thanks Neil. It looks like San Juan would be the place to stay. Are all the bars and clubs kinda centralized? Like just take a taxi from the hotel to the area and then back again.

If you stay in old san juan you can walk to all the bars and clubs in old san juan no problem. Very narrow streets, cobblestones, and the places are all close together. The bigger clubs, casinos, etc out on the strip between old san juan and the airport you would need a taxi. I can't remember the name of it off my head but all the big hotels are there. Should be in any tourist guide. I know the ritz, wyndham etc are there.

Also here is good guide on beaches http://www.gotopuertorico.com/go_be...=english&page=2

I've been personally to Crashboat, crowded decent snorkling. Shacks, awesome snorkling but average beach. Isla verde is right near San Juan. Flamenco is that awesome one on Culebra.
