Hey I found some guy who has a brand new pair of NS10Ms that he found in his shop on the top of a shelf hidden since 2001. He's willing to sell them, but I'm stuck now between buyin these (probably for $1000+) or just going ahead and buyin the HS50Ms.

What would you do in this situation? Go for the collectible model or stick to buying the newer model?

tiz a difficult one. I myselve have the Hs ones. But it's a very very ugly sound totally honest, and even your commercial cd's will sound crap through them giving anybody with a good ear and a good eq and compressor / finaliser the possibility to even enhance these. (which means in this particular case crap is good, lol)

I don't know about the dinosaurs, but I read that they are give and take based on the same principle (it even states so in the manual!!!): less added at the speaker level is more added at the mixing and mastering level.

quite honestly, I personally would not bother with NS10's. Why you ask - well, quite simply they should not be used as "primary" monitors for everyday jamming - they are more aimed at percision monitoring for trying to get your mix to sound just right for production. For everyday use you would probably need to get another set of monitors, as these can't handle the low basses (Not to mention they require a separate amp - yet another expense on top) and have a limited application. Unless you're mixing 24/7 this is an overkill and probably a silly expense.

Now, all sentimental values aside, there are plenty of online references showing you "pros" and "cons" of ns10's. Yet all agree - that this is a monitor that should be used to determine how your final mix will sound. Mind you - not loud!!! just accurate.

They are not magic wands and I think for the money you will send for a pair of ns10's + amp you're better off getting something else. I'd suggest ADAMS but they are not cheap. ON the plus side - they are your every day use monitors + mastering monitors in 1.

Suit yourself, though. I'd think twice about it.... just because it's new in the box - doesn't mean jack. Keep in mind that cones in these are made from basically - paper. Sitting for so many ears in the box, god knows in what kind of conditions (humidity/temp control/etc) could have done them more harm then if they were used in the studio.

just playing a bit of devil's advocate.

Now, if you got them for $500 or so - I'd say grab'em simply coz you could easily shift them for more money on e-bay. but I probably would not keep them if they were worth 1K to someone and I only paid $500-$800.

Oh, and if you do end up getting them - do check them out though.. and keep a roll of toilet papers or tissues handy. You'll need that to tape over the tweeters :p

Recording studios are still using them today and you might get a studio interested in buying them and giving you a decent profit.
Ring up some studios and ask them if they would be interested in buying a brand new set of Yamaha ns10’s still boxed.
Some studios love them to bits and the only reason they stopped producing them was that they ran out of the material they used to make the cones.
Rather than make inferior ns10’s they just decided to discontinue them, if the room isn’t damp then take a gamble.
Make him an offer he carn't refuse :D

Probably the best piece of advice I saw on Craigslist:

Listen, most of us know why NS10's are popular but really anyone paying over $300 for a pair of these speakers is a damn fool. These speakers are famous because they sound like ty home consumer speakers. They say if you get a mix sounding good on them, it will sound good anywhere. People wake the "F" up and learn the speakers that you have now. Stop being lazy. If you have a decent pair of monitors you can mix on them and play it back in your car, you dad's old stereo, you walkman, etc. for a reference. You will then hear what is missing or whets over done in your mix and go back and work at it. Soon you will know what is what and get good mixes on your current speakers.
