this rises another question: do you believe that there is a hell?

you know that place where if we do something bad we're gonna fry on a pan for our afterlife? with that big red guy whooping our ass?

Do I believe in God as described in various religious texts? Absolutely not.

Do I believe in a higher being...some kind of superior, alien life form about which we will never understand? Most definitely.

I voted no.

I tend to agree with you on this. I mean, it isn't ALWAYS the case, but I think more often than not, once the kid gets older, they rebel against what they had shoved down their throats growing up.

I have an over-bearingly religious family, and I have watched my cousins rebel against their parents because of this.

EDIT: I believe in a higher power that we do not understand. If you wanna call that God, then yes, I believe in God.

Some of you with your comments on origins could do well to brush up on memetic theory, amongst other things. Issues such as the Catholic dislike of condoms or the Jewish ban on pork can easily be explained when you have the proper historic context.

very true. reasons behind their prohibition date back to policies that arose in different times where there were concerns that dont face us today.

they're still around out of traditions created long-past..

You misunderstand hell. The image of hell that most of us have comes from the analogy Dante used in his epic Inferno to describe the pain and agony of hell. Hell (according to the bible) is not a physical location of fire and brimstone (sp?), rather hell is a state of existance outside of God's love. This is not to say that God does not love those who exist in this state, (scripture tell us) he does, rather those that exist outside of God's love do so because they have rejected that love. As all joy/happyness/love is simply a manifestation of God's love (the source of all love according to Christianity) a rejection of God's love is a rejection of everything that brings joy/happyness/love. In short, hell is a state of existance in which one experiences none of those feelings that make existance worthwhile.

Man, I'm glad I"m not dependant on god for my happiness. That would blow.

Independent happiness is great.

No no no, you have it wrong. God is the source of love as God is love. To accept love is to accept God, whether you identify that as what you are doing or not. To enter the state of hell one must reject all love thereby rejecting every form of God. If there is any truth to the tennents of christianity then your happiness is dependant on your acceptance of God's love in some form, however, your choice is independent. You choose love or you don't but happyness cannot exist in the absence of love and love cannot exist in the absence of God.
