Well you'll need to get an ide port adapter anyhow cause normally the port on laptop hard drives is smaller than ports on hard drives on regular pcs. |
I'm trying to find that adapter on tigerdirect.com but don't see it... |

I'll try that then. |

Note You may receive the following error message:
C:\System Volume Information is not accessible. Access is denied.
If you receive this message, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to gain access to this folder and continue with the procedure:
"How to gain access to the System Volume Information folder"

Boot using your winxp cd.
Instead of choosing ASR. Choose Install WinXP (or something like that). You will then have an option to choose which partition to install it on. Choose whichever partition your OS is installed on.
The cd should then detect the operating system thats on your laptop and ask if you would like to install or repair etc.
Choose repair. The cd should then replace all your winxp files or install any missing ones.
I'm not too sure about the steps and what i said above is a rough guideline but i have had a similiar problem happen to me before and it worked for me.
Another thing. Are you able to boot into safe mode ? |

No, not able to boot into safe mode. I'll try what you suggested. |

| The repair option led me back to the recovery console. No good. |

my honest opinion is to save yourself the trouble , and buy the adapter to connect your laptop hard drive to your pc . then just copy whatever you need to the pc .
what i usually do to get out of this jam is make 2 partitions on my hard drive. 1 mainly for the windows system, and 1 for everything else . there is a small % hit in runtime, opening apps, and such, but you can barely see the difference . I rather have that than worry about losing my data if my system crashes . unless if my whole HDD fails, then i'm screwed . :wtf: |

Thanks. Tomorrow after work, I'm buying the adapter, and if I have enough cash, prolly another bigger hard drive for this laptop. The stock one was only 20 GB. Still, it's gonna suck reinstalling most of the stuff that came with this laptop, since it was off of a friend who did his own image for me. |
