"A BERLIN history society yesterday unveiled an information sign at the site of Hitler's underground bunker, marking for the first time exactly where the Nazi leader killed himself at the end of the Second World War.
Only 200 metres from the memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust, the Berlin Underworlds society has put up a sign explaining the layout and construction of the bunker - now buried under a car park.
"Visitors to this area... have until now never received information about this site," Dietmar Arnold, the head of the organisation, said.
The society, which runs tours of Berlin's bomb shelters, said the plaque was there to dispel myths about the place where Hitler died on 30 April, 1945 - hastening an end to the war.
"Our visitors are told absolute rubbish. Myths are maintained about the Führer's underground motorway running to Tempelhof Airport," Mr Arnold said.
The board uses factual language to give the history of the shelter - from its completion by Hochtief AG in October 1944 to it becoming a car park.
The city had resisted signposting the bunker for fear it could be a gathering point for neo-Nazis. But attitudes have changed and the site is seen as a counterpoint to the Holocaust memorial.
"The one can only be understood with the other in the background," said Christine Wolf, of the state heritage authority in Berlin.
The bunker was blown up in December 1947 by Soviet troops, destroying much of the interior. The area was turned into park land and became part of the border zone when the Berlin Wall was built.
In the 1980s, the roof was removed, the interior was filled with sand and gravel and the car park opened." (Courtesy of The Scotsman)
A couple years back visited it with my school. The tour guide, said they would never do something like that, because of all the neo-nazi's / skinheads would go there and worship it as a holy shrine. Guess he was wrong. |

it is a good film as it is based on his secretary's memories and some of Speer's memories. gives you a great input on what happened. although there are a few parts that are just based on what probably happened (goebbels children). no one really could say what exactly happened. that part kills me...
it is a good history film. but i think it isnt a great, great german film (Fassbinder anyone?). but watch it as it is worth watching. |
