How much longer is vinyl going to live?

| Four more years i'de say but there will probably be turntablists still using it to a certain extent and DJs who play older Jazz, Disco, R&B and hip hop...but for trance, techno, house etc DJs...it will be mostly CD and Laptops...either Ableton or Serato or Final Scratch...so i'de say in EDM probably only 20 or 30% will still use vinyl in four years. Thats just my prediction, seeing more and more DJs getting away from it...or just using Serato instead, because they prefer the feel of a TT to a CDJ. |

But even he is utilizing Ableton and CDJs now as well...using vinyl less and less. |

| i think the question is...how long is the cdj gonna live? thanks to technology such as ssl,aLive, and mp3s, the cdj isn't as necessary anymore. the TT will live on forever, maybe not for trance, but for the hip-hopers and collectors and stuff... i dunno, what do you all think about the life of the cdj? would be interesting get some insight on it... |

I don't see it going away. There's going to be some who prefer to lug around a laptop or two like PvD, some who like using both like James Zabiela, and others who are mainly using CDs now like Ferry Corsten, Matt Hardwick, Gareth Emery etc, even Tiesto and Armin are using more and more CDs. So I see them coexisting, and I can see in another few years it will be CDJs vs. SSL. Haha i'm not psychic but this seems to be the trend now. |

As far as existing records go, I honestly don't think they are going anywhere. When you consider many older tracks or music from labels that have gone belly up, or possibly certain tracks that are only available on vinyl and no other format, you are still gonna see vinyls around because you can't get the music on anything else. Also, if you disregard the current bandwagon jumping for Ableton and cdj's, you will still have people that simply prefer vinyl and will continue to use them regardless. Ditto for scratch and hip-hop dj's as well.
I think the more important question is not when vinyls will die out, but when vinyl will stopped being used as a medium for new and future releases. If you look at it in this way, then I'll say in a good 2 years or so, vinyls will essentially be "dead" and cd's or digital downloads will be the only two formats used by the record labels. Until then, vinyls will hang around because the option to buy them is still there.
Again I just have to ask... if vinyl is/was supposed to die out, why hasn't it already and why is it that this one single format outlived all the other current media over the years? |
