Electronic music in a Church? (pg. 3)

Nah it wouldn't work if you made it a rave type of culture with a ton of people dancing, dark lights, and the music pumping. That type of venue is all about losing control and yourself to the music, something that is in direct opposition to most organized religions.
However, I do feel that a lounge/coffee shop type of youth group(not in church) get together would work with edm playing. That would allow people to talk about the music, listen to the music, but at the same time allow for a youth group type of sermon to happen.
If you want to try it though you have to be realistic about it, adding a bible verse during a breakdown isn't creating "Christian Trance." Most EDM is about worshipping the music, not to spread the message of the gospels. |

Good advice as far as the Bible verses go. I had actually already thought of that a while ago but you just reminded me. Also, I wish I could include a pic of my church. On Sunday morning it resembles a club more then a church. the pastor always has the lights off during service. we have 6 very very large video screens and about 100 grand worth of color / intelligent lighting (including black/neon lights). during the song service a rock band plays and on the screens they play "semi-trippy" videos of water and mountains and such with Bible verses or the lyrics to the song over them....it really isn't what you would picture a church to look like. Actually, in this area there are about 4 or 5 other churches that match this description as well. Way more clubby then churchy to start with. The pastor wears jeans a t-shirt 1/2 the time...but the message is rock solid and that is really all should matter... |

| Even though I'm not a particularily religious person it just doesn't feel right to me. A church is not a place to hold parties in. |

Forms of music like hip hop or rock have vocals in them. Trance does not. People accept christian rock or hip hop mainly because the music carries a holy message. What holy message would EDM carry ?
Eastern religions like Hinduism infact have a tradition of playing trance music and dancing inside the temples. That music is trance inducing.
Repetative utterances of the name of God accompanied by rhythemic drum beat induces a physical state of trance. The goal here is to increase devotion towards God by creating an extraordinary personal experience which is hard to recreate any where else.
The modern trance music does not induce any physical state of trance. It's end purpose is entertainment. It is hard to justify on any grounds why one would want to play this type of music in a church. |

I agree and I disagree. When I listen to trance driving down the road or working at home I often find myself praying or talking to God in my head sometimes in praise sometimes in frustration whatever...The feeling that I get from worshiping on a Sunday morning and the feeling that I get dancing are very close. I'm aware of the use of trance type music in Eastern religions and I understand the importance of not trying to mix those religions with Christianity. I've witnessed people in "trance like states" lifting there hands and praising God to the point where sometimes they even pass right out on the floor in the middle of church. Actually, at my old church this was a common sight on Sunday mornings...this was a very traditional non-denominational church whose pastors were all in there late 60's to 70's...
Personally, each time I enter into a state of worship I feel like I'm in a trance. A trance where I am focusing on God and / or addressing issues inside myself through prayer...
for me the music is a tool. my mind seems to run a little faster and more complexly then most other people that I meet (not saying thats a good thing either) and sometimes I have so many different thought processes running that I forget to take time to pray. Listening to this music seems to help me focus or calm me allowing me to concentrate on the one thing that really matters to me. now, I'm not at all saying that I pray mostly when I listen to Trance because that's not the case at all. It's just sometimes it helps me focus. And that fact alone is the reason that I believe that it can be used for church related activities.

that is one of my all time favorite CDS. i remember buying it at the age of 12 the day it was released. i just listened to it yesterday in my car on the way to work. BT is the man and I'm pissed that I missed him 2 weeks ago here in Detroit after the Movement Festival. I was a vendor at the festival and I had to stay late to clean up missing his show at Blue. )-: |

I used to spin during game time at my youth group. After a while everybody opened up to it. It was really nice to actually show some teenage americans what real edm is.
I hope you succeed man, cuz this fight is a hard one. So many people associate clubbing with drugs, sex, and alcohol (even the clubbers themselves,) that it's hard as crap to get Christians to open up to it. Just make sure to rock out some quality tunes for 'em. Good luck! :) |
