Hi guys,
I recently got myself a job designing and maintaining a website for a small business.
Now, I know how to design websites but I know nothing about uploading them.
My boss wants an official address so I know he has to pay for it but how do I go about getting the domain name and then uploading the site?
Thanks guys, any help would be greatly appreciated coz I don't even know what to search for on this sort of thing! lol. |

find someone to host it. www.winsave.com is good
after that, download an ftp client and upload it to your webhosts server |

how did you get this job and you dont even know that! lucky bastard! I have to the freelance, I be up at campus trying to slang websites LOL.
Get a fullversion of an FTP program (go to mininova.org - Search for CuteFTP)
Go here: http://www.findmyhost.com/ and choose a host.
This is very very basic stuff and if you cant figure out the rest then you shouldnt even have taken the job. |

| and why the hell are you asking TA? if you go a job maintaining and designing a website and you dont know then you should be searching the web and learning as much as you can as fast as you can. its not complicated at all but you have to at least know what you are doing. |

ive had random people come up to be asking me to make them a website, pretty weird. i get so many people wanting websites, i tell them to come up with a basic design and some basic ideas and call me. either they're having trouble coming up with designs or having trouble dialing my number, but they just dont call :( |

I'm a poor college student, I'm tryin hard to get my money lol |

what are you majoring in? i've been considering a degree in some sort of computer graphics field, it'll be either that or a computer science degree. i know both and could easily learn more in each subject, its just a matter of preferance i geuss. |

imo, there is a difference between computer graphics and computer science degree, depending on the college of course, and the professors that teach the course .
if you take computer graphics, most probably you would take a lot of classes taht make you know dreamwaver, flash, and the works . some drawing classes and a couple of math courses here and there . you would get lucky to take a computer graphics class where you would have to create your own opengl (graphical language), and draw graphics using algebraic and trigonometric functions . I took a class like this ( just the standard level. they offered an advanced level, which i couldn't do , due to unfortunate circumstances) . i really liked the class, and enjoyed the course work and history of graphics.
if you take computer science, the first two years you could smoke past them, imo. easy material. if you are well organized, and now the basics of what a programming language does , then you're fine . as long as you understand the logisitcs, you're cool. the next two years, i had fun implementing stuff like data structures (trees, sorted lists, algorithms, the such) , file systems, 3 tier web approaches and the such . that stuff entertains me. i guess i like to see a lot of work on my plate to keep me busy . haha .
so hopefully you have the same amount of fun i had in college. :toothless
edit* sorry to break out the true news, but there is a reason why guys like *cough* Nou *cough* can't make the cut for the second half of a college career . |
