I've always though it was this "Rave act" that was passed in 2002 in the US, which cracked down on ecstacy and other illicit drug use, and naturally it targeted raves. But the whole Rave thing was waning at that time as well, clubs started to become more popular here and around the world (even though they did shut a few down like Twilo in New York), and in Europe there were big events like Innercity, Mystery Land, Nocturnal Wonderland, Creamfields, Trance Energy and Movement etc...so basically splintered into the club scene and festival scene. But there's still raves that happen. Have heard about some raves, esp with psy. Heard that one in Colorado or Utah (Not sure) was raided by military police because of drugs last year. So really it's harder and harder to host them, esp in the U.S, unless it's really kept secret, which is sometimes hard to do esp with the Internet, word gets around...

Personally it really bothers me when people throw this term around so loosely. It really shouldn't,yet it never fails to.Here in montreal there are still quite a bit of underground stuff going on, but it really isnt the same. The people do the drugs, listen to the music, do everything that was prevelant in the early days, but fundamentally it still isnt even remotly similar. Its inexplicable, a feel, a vibe, an I dont know.It will never come back, so why not move on and create a new vibe for a new generation? We also have massives(nothing compared to europe of course, even though our city is still considered the most euro like in North America) that people call raves. It bothers me when people say it is a rave, because all its nothing more than a huge PARTY.Just because it goes on all night and has edm playing does not make it a rave.
I dont know if this makes any sense to all of you as the wake and bake rule is in effect today.Hopefully some of you will have insight into this subject because all though its been beaten to death, I still always enjoy what the next generation "raver" considers as the status of all this junk.

Nono, drugs gave birth to the rave, not kill it. :D

uber commercialized rebirth <-- death <-- legislation <-- media interest <-- commercialization <-- a lovely underground scene

you might be right. then again you also might be wrong. I loved raves for everything they were. But someone mentioned on here that people who went didnt' have a good understanding of Edm during those times. I guess it's an evolution thing, because when I used to go to 'em i also didn't know much about Edm in general. As soon as I started to learn about artists and the sub-genres, my interest quickly evaporated. meh....i don't know.
