ITEM: Malaria in a tropical country.

NEXT WEEK'S ITEM: The sky is not always blue, sometimes it's grey and red.

quote:

OTTAWA (CP) - The Public Health Agency of Canada is monitoring an outbreak of malaria in the Bahamas after a Canadian traveller contracted the disease.

The United States has also reported one case in a returning traveller. Both of these cases travelled to Great Exuma. Malaria, a flu-like illness, is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an

infected mosquito and is very rarely transmitted from one person to another.

The agency is recommending Canadians going to Great Exuma use antimalarial medication and insect repellents.

Hundreds? Malaria kills millions of people every year - it is a massive cause of death in Africa, and South/Central America. The funny thing is, this is basically common knowledge to everyone in Canada who travels - hell, we had to get Malaria medication prior to going to the Dominican Republic.

The more significant fact is that the Carribean Islands are not normally thought of as Malaria hotspots. Travellers are often not warned of dangers prior to leaving, because it isn't even deemed a risk. Cuba, Dominican (Until last year) and Jamaica haven't been places to warn travellers about - and this has a significant impact on tourism revenue once a country is deemed dangerous.
