So after doing numerous searches on TranceAddict, reading the Wikipedia article, and other various research... I can't figure out exactly whom, if anyone, "Pete Tong" is.
For example, there is the movie "It's All Gone Pete Tong", which I have yet to see, and I understand is a work of fiction. But according to the Wikipedia article, there is a cameo by the "real" Pete Tong. According to various things I've read on TranceAddict, Pete Tong never existed. So I'm terribly confused. I was wondering if someone could clear it up for me. :) |

Pete Tong is a legendary DJ from the UK. He's toured the world & played/managed some of the biggest labels in history. He's been on radio1 ever since I can remember listening as a young kid. He host both the 'essential selection' and the 'essential mix' which are on radio1 here.
His name has become cockney rhyming slang (a london thing) for 'wrong' so it means 'its all gone wrong' |

As stated Pete Tong is a long standing and well respected DJ from the UK.
The confusion it seems arises from the "It's all gone Pete Tong" statement which is actually just Cockney Rhyming Slang for It's all gone wrong.
edit : meh Ian beat me to it and he smells |

Pete Tong is a DJ. He used to do essential mix sessions on radio one in the UK (which during the time I listened to, were very good).
The phrase 'Pete Tong' is also cockney rhyming slang. cockney is a pretty weird thing to explain but it is just rhyming words...
For instance, apples and pears = stairs.
china plate = mate (hence 'hows it going me old china?')
harris = arse (harris from *aris*totle which rhymes with bottle which is glass which rhymes with arse)
Like I said, its pretty hard to explain if you dont live in the UK or have any experience with Cockney but 'Pete Tong' is just rhyming slang for 'wrong.'
Hence the name of the film - 'Its all gone wrong.' |
