| I had planned to go but i've decided that 60$ for a consistently overpacked afterhours club is so not worth it for any DJ. BEB is a few nights later so it looks like i'll be resting up instead. Saving that cash also means that i'll check out AVB at Aria instead where there is always room too dance since they respect building safety capacity laws unlike Sona. In my case, hopefully S&D will come to a better venue next time. |

World's top DJ Sasha - appearing with partner Digweed on the Heavy tour - in unprecedented party format
Steve Lalla
The mere mention of his name unites DJs, clubbers, candy ravers and jaded post-ravers alike in shared worship. Often considered the world's favourite DJ (a title that can be challenged only by his partner John Digweed), Sasha has somehow managed to retain the street credibility essential to survival within the international dance community. He's toed the line (and by doing so, blurred the line) between house, trance and techno for the last decade, his popularity strengthened by a steadfast refusal to be categorized in an industry that thrives on technological innovation, futurist aesthetics and underground appeal.
"Whenever you win an award, or get voted number one, it's fantastic," Sasha explains. "It's an amazing buzz. But something I've learned is that you come into fashion and you drop out of fashion. Things are always moving around very quickly in the electronic DJ world. You have to learn to take the low points with the high points.
"John and I are constantly trying to reinvent ourselves and see which way we can push the music so we never get pinned down to one particular sound. It really depends on what's sounding good. One month you might get a box of amazing breakbeat records, the next month it might be house."
Mix and matching
Like many international dance music icons, Sasha and Digweed have built an empire upon a combination of impressive mixing abilities and well-received studio productions. Though he has recorded seminal anthems such as Be As One, with vocalist Maria Naylor, and remixed musicians as diverse as Orbital, Seal, the Pet Shop Boys, Chemical Brothers and Madonna, Sasha still has not defined a consistent production style or series for himself.
"Once my record drops in September, it will hopefully expose people to another dimension that perhaps hasn't been there in the past," he recounts after a long day at work in his Amsterdam studio. "I've kind of felt that there's been a bit of a hole in my career waiting for this record to get done. I started the whole project five, or seven, years ago. Back then I didn't even know how to work a computer or anything. It's taken me a few years just to get my head around the studio and really get comfortable... There are a couple of tracks on the album that were recorded a couple of years ago but most of it's been done in the last six months. A lot of stuff on my album is more electro, breakbeat. There's actually only one four-to-the-floor track on the album."
Soul brothers
Sasha has become well known throughout North America due to his and John's famed residency at Manhattan superclub Twilo (which began in April of '97) and, shortly thereafter, through their Northern Exposure Global Underground studio-mix CDs. Contrary to popular belief, John and Sasha are not blood brothers, or even childhood mates: They first began working together in 1993, beginning a residency at Nottingham's Renaissance nightclub upon discovering the ease with which their respective styles blended.
With the Delta Heavy Tour, Sasha takes one step further into the fantasy land with which he is constantly identified, as he and Digweed team up with Kevin Lyman (whose Immortal Entertainment produced the Warped Tour and worked on Lollapalooza), and New York's Jimmy Van M., to provide a unique experience for electronic music fans across the continent.
"I'm really buzzing about this tour and especially about the way we're presenting ourselves," he begins earnestly. "It's going to be a really exciting experience for us and, I hope, for the people that come to the shows. It's me and John DJ-ing in Montreal, but we bring our own productions and our own visuals. I've got about 20 new tracks I'll be dropping. We're presenting ourselves in a way that DJs haven't done before, on a much larger scale than what we're used to. We bring some gadgets along to play along with, our own sound system..."
[Insert incredulous sound while interviewer spews scalding coffee over self in shock.]
"We're bringing our own sound system, which is the legendary Phazon System from New York that was installed at Twilo. After Twilo shut down, we thought 'Let's try to take that experience around North America.' We've got two articulated lorries [i.e., tractor-trailers], tour buses. It's something like an eight-hour set-up process for each show. We're bringing everything: our own light guy, visuals will be mixed in live. We got these guys from L.A. called Imaginary Forces - they've done loads of movies - to design visuals for us. They did the opening sequence for the film Seven. I saw that and thought "wouldn't it be great if we could do something with these guys!"
Imaginary Forces helped Sasha & Co. develop a visual identity for the sound presentation. They came out with "these amazing twisted tribal images" that will be the focus of the tour. It's the kind of thing that Sasha says he would never have envisioned as part of his career as a DJ.
"I had no idea anything would get to this," he laughs. "I mean, taking tour buses and articulated lorries! It's the stuff you dream about when you're a kid. I never even thought I'd have a career in music! I'm just happy my parents forced me in that direction. I have made decisions to structure my career, but I haven't sat there thinking 'Hmmn, how can I become the most famous DJ in the world?' I feel like I've instinctively made decisions that have helped. My decisions are always based on my heart and not necessarily my head; I make decisions based on what I think is right and because of that, I guess, success has come to me."
If there's a message buried in the medium, finishes Sasha, it's of a less cerebral, more outwardly human nature.
"I don't think there's any message apart from getting people to enjoy themselves and lose themselves in the music, take their minds off all the other crap that's going on in the world. I think people are looking for meaning when it's about going out and having a great time!"
