Here in Toronto though; we're deathly afraid of making eye contact with people on the subway.

wow that is MOST strange

I have made countless of small convo's with people in shops, subway, buses, out on a street

something funny happens, an instant eye contact and a smile in return

guys, are you sure we are talking about the same city?

I can definetly agree with that, though I haven't been to NYC. When I lived in Toronto I noticed reluctance to make eye contact, and idle chit chat. I remember going to work on the subway and this old man started making conversation with me about the weather, where I was headed etc. so I continued talking with him. People peered over their books with this look on their face like, "What are they doing?". Our conversation ended with each of us going our seperate ways and saying "Have a good day.you take care" to which the other passengers looked more shocked at this point.

I think the only time I noticed eye contact was in job interviews or at the Guv seeing pupils as big as saucers looking back at me :nervous:

This kind of thing happens to me all the time. Talking to strangers on the bus/subway is completly normal. Although, most of the time I do infact just want to chill out on the bus and just pop on my headphones.

You are going to get open/closed people in every city, I think its all about how YOU approach the situation.

If you are open and willing, anything can happen.

LOL

Actually Toronto people have a very polite public persona. Ive always said that. Unfortunately i think its due to the fact that people here just dont want to cause a scene because "what would others think of me?"

Europeans will be the first to push you out of the way to get into a train or bud in line. But they will also be the first to invite a stranger for a cup of coffee or show a strange foreigner around their city (happened to me many times) Cant say that about here!

Gah. How come you insist on always on posting these things with such a negative attitude? I thought maybe, for once, you'd have something good to say in one of your threads. I suppose I was just naively hopeful. If you hate this city so much, why are you still here?

Honestly, your threads are just depressing. It's OK to be proactive, but it seems like you just hate the city, the government, and society in general, just for the sake of hating it. And somehow, people think that's cool. :whip:

Don't listen to this guy. Toronto is a great place and the people there are incredibly polite, friendly, and kind.

i really wanted to say the same thing, but I had a feeling I wouldn't be supported on this one

i really do feel that Canadians are one of the most friendly nations

This is another one of those feel-good surveys for New Yorkers. Since 9-11 you can't say anything bad about NYC, lest you be called an unsympathetic prick and unamerican.

I've been to NYC numerous times - it's not the least friendly/polite place in the world, but it certainly isn't the most friendly either.

Just another meh survey
