| i think the difference is pretty obvious. anyone who never heard a trance tune or techno tune could clearly identify the differences. |

why send a newbie to ishkur's guide?
the one who seeks knowledge will only be confused with that guide since it's made as a joke for entertaining purposes. read the guide disclamer please :whip: ishkur's guide should be taken lightly. |

its still helpful it determining the differences between 2 genres, regardless of your opinions about its legitamacy. |

Trance imo has more connections to your feelings.. techno is more flat. |
That's pretty overgeneralizing. |

A prime example showing that maturity doesn't commensurate with age. No, I was referring to you, please don't take it to heart. |

everything that you think is "techno" isn't techno.
everything you can find under "techno" on P2P's isn't techno.
techno is what newbies to electronic music use to call everything electronic.
but in reality techno is a very harsh genre that is more suitable to the experienced listener |
Techno is what most people in Europe like but isn't the original techno with US roots, which some here keep referring to, without telling it clearly.
Most Europeans see Marusha and Westbam and many others as techno. (Love Parade stuff of mid 90's)
Personally I don't like the "real" Techno at all because it's borring and doesn't have an uplifting bass.
Since some cann't tell the difference it seems obvious they are referring to European Techno and not the US Techno.
So should the question be: What's the difference between what most Europeans think is Techno and Trance?
Are there any Germans which can explain they believe is Techno? (The Dutch were more into Hardcore, Gabber, Happy Hardcore and Eurodance in the mid 90's) |

I like Ishkur's guide. It is a web classic, a good overview of EDM. I especially like the way he hangs rap off the EDM tree . . .
Techno and trance are both typically 4/4 electronic dance music with a "backbeat" (i.e. snares/claps/rhythmic emphasis on beats 2 and 4). Techno uses almost exclusively percussion in its original form, and since the beat is kind of formulaic and unwavering, the only real variation comes from filter sweeps, effects, automation levels. What little synth sounds are there are as noised out or atonal as possible. Trance uses traditional western music. It has a prominent melody and a bass that progresses through chord changes. The percussion is pretty standard and unmodified, and effect play is limited to effect sweeps or filter sweeps sparingly. Techno (and EDM) started in detroit suburbs by upper middle class black kids mixing electro and funk. They only had drum machines really. With the 303s for moving basslines, digital synths coming down in price, etc, by the mid 90s several techno artists were getting bored so they added back standard pop music elements to techno, like chord progression, melodies, verses, choruses, etc. This was trance. It really slips all over the place at this point in time, and even by 1995 there are several genre crossers well known to all EDM fans. It really should all just be called EDM. That's what it is. |

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. But I'm a huge fan of Trance & Techno. That's why I'm so excited when I found this web site and community. I thought it's hard to find Trance community. Please be nice to me, coz I'm just a n00b. (>.<)
Anyway, I've been listening to both genre for quite long time, but still don't get the differences between them. What makes them so different, anyway? The elements? The techniques? Well, maybe I could figure out some songs. But I'm still wondering to know more and deep.
Thanks. |
trance cds are more likely to have unicorns, dolphins, clouds, and rainbows on them, while techno are more likely to have robots, cars and industrial allegories. |
