What a great way to start my birthday

WARNING: Long rant!

Alright...so the festivities before my birthday were grand. But the beginning of my "official" birth "date" did not go over so well.

After the long drive from NYC to Hamilton, I stopped off in Cambridge to see Cale before I went home. I left his house at about 9:30pm. It began raining a little bit - no big deal. But then the CRAZY lightening started (and I was driving right into it). This may not seem like a big deal to some of you, but I am EXTREMELY terrified of lightening, so driving right into the pit of fire was not that good.

It was alright at first, not too much rain and the lightening was far away for now. But then the rain started getting REALLY heavy and the lightening was on either side of me, in front of me and ABOVE me. I called my mom (voice dial and speaker phone), CRYING and telling her to pray for me so that I get home safely.

To make matters worse, I thought I had enough gas to get home (I had rented a Ford Focus that was amazing on gas to NYC, so I dunno what was different this time). But anyway, the gas light went on and I started freaking out (I was still 80km away). So I pulled off at a stop that said there was gas, but I was unable to find it. I pulled over and called Cale in tears and asked him to help me. I was in the middle of a crazy lightening battle, was running out of gas...and I was alone. I have never been so terrified in my life.

I finally get to a gas station and fill up. I get back on the 401 in the pouring rain and lightening - at least one problem is fixed.

The next thing I know, I'm at the exit for St. Jocaim and there's a police car in the right lane (left lane closed for construction)...flares in the lane and a cop car at the front. There's cars still in the lane ahead of the cars. Everything happened so quick, I wasn't sure what to do. I don't know how to get home from St. Jocaim, and I was already scared so I followed the car infront of me - who turned to follow the cars that were stopped. Immediatly after a cop flashed his lights and I stopped (I had to anyway) and put down my window.

He got really upset with me and said "Why are you driving on a closed highway, give me your licensce." I apologized right away (you could tell I was nervous and flustered) and I told him I had a rental car and gave him my license and papers and explained that I wasn't sure what to do, and couldn't see very well and I was just following the guy in front of me.

He took my stuff, talked to the guy ahead of me and then went back into his cruiser. I started bawling my eyes out, and after about 20 minutes he finally came back and virtuatlly started yelling at me again. I once again apologized and told him that I was nervous and just followed the guy ahead of me and wasn't sure what was happening. He cut me off and said that there was a cop directing traffic at the exit (I didn't know this...I just thought all of the people getting off knew where they were going). He was being a bit rude to me, cutting me off and gave my license and papers to me and said "Well now you're charged with an offence and you'll have to wait here."

He charged me with "driving on a closed highway" and gave me a $110 ticket for a $85 fine. And I waited an extra 2 hours.

The bit of good news I got today:

Fortunatly I work for a retired Sgt. and lawyer and I showed him the ticket. He looked up the charge and it says that I had intended to break the law and drive on the highway. So he said that we are going to take it to court and he'll take care of it. He said I should have no problem getting rid of the offence (with no demerit points - thank goodness). Looking at the positive side, this'll get me a bit more familiar with the court process, as I want to be a lawyer.

Hopefully the rest of my day will go better :)

I had my keys in hand at one point to drive down there to be with her, and would have gone had I known how long she was going to be stuck.

PS: Told you that you'd make it to the gas station, Miss Freakout McGasLight ;)

PPS: Obviously the rest of your day will be better starting at 2pm :D
