What should I do?

Hello everyone, Ive gotten great advice from this forum time in and time out and I am hoping to get more of the same here, because this is a serious crossroads type question. Well Ive been messing around with trying to produce house and its sub genres alike for about a year and a half now and Ive kind of hit a crossroad. I love this music and I feel compelled to make it but I feel like maybe I dont have the talent for this, or better put maybe I am not musically inclined. I have made songs that I feel are good and some that I feel are not so good. I really want to take my music professionally but I wonder maybe this thing is not my bag, ESPECIALLY when I have a buddy of mine that is continuing to grow musically and getting very good. Although on the flip side he has acquired plug-ins and different instruments and equipment, while Im still using exsp24. It makes me look at myslef and wonder should I give up? Then I think that the only thing in my setup are some monitors and logic, nothing else, when I say nothing I mean nothing, I dont even have the adequate ram I need yet. So I ask you all is it wrong to think that I can make professional sounding music with nothing but logic from the box, should I not get so down on myself because I havent made any good tracks, because I dont have any good equipment, and is it more likely that the more additions I make to my setup, plug ins and equipment alike that I will begin to come close to what I want my music too sound like, or is it possible that I stink and that I should give up. Is it a fair assessment from what has gone on so far, will no amount of equipment help someone who just isnt good at making music, and should I cut my losses. Lastly if you all do think that I can get better, what type of books should I be reading to learn more about making music on my own. Ive tried searching for knowledge that will make me a better producer but everyhting that I read doesnt seem to help much, so I would like some recommendations there. What I really wish I could find is some literature that will help me get the ideas in my head out better. Lastly here is a track I made so u can assess a little better, once again Im not so much asking how you like the track but more on do you see potential here, that there is something I can build on

ok here goes....stick at it for the pure enjoyment of making music...try n save some cash for ram, vsts etc etc...just make music for the sake of it ...it doesnt matter what its like just bash out the tunes...my musics not so good and ive been at it five years on and of...i find the need to make music all the time and hopfully progress with each tune...two steps foward one step back...do it for the love of it and dont beat yourself up about it not being so good...i have friends who are eccellent at making all styles of music and i let it get to me sometimes about their talent...some people just have what it takes,,others work hard and stick at it and most do it for the sake of it....dont give up...musics for life not just for cristmas...get on the net and find a program called limewire...its a download/file sharing program ...load it up and search for music software...vst plugins etc etc...get some ram and go for it..in the long term you wont regret it...all the best....michael:):) |

HEY!
Pull your head up goddammit. Look, noone says this 's easy. Well to Mozart it was, quite litteraly, childs-play. For most of us though, we need to work on it. I have done this for 2-3 years, and it's just recently that I get people saying my music sounds some-what proffesional, and I'm a swift learner. This whole bit, music and production, is a quite big cake. It takes life-times to eat it all. And as we all know, not everyone has that kind of a stomach.
If you're one of those that has a smaller stomach, well you just have to let it grow on you. Make music for fun, play around with it. You'll learn slowly. Don't be so upset that your tunes aren't as good as other tunes. Complete them anyway, you'll learn on the journey.
And pirate yourself some VST's and samples. They get you far.
How long have you been doing this? |

A year isn't that long a time. Just keep at it, it will come to you.
It's not _all_ about mastering, and honestly you shouldn't even care about mastering in the beginning. |

It's not really about mastering at all, actually. |

Well u would know mystery, I ve heard your and I only make that kind of music when I dream. But Ive heard people say that your track only sounds as good as its produced. As if to say mastering will make a decent track a great track. |

Mastering is only the final touch, though. It won't make gold out of crap.
My works are the result of years of banging my head against the wall. It hasn't always been easy or fun but I've never given up no matter how I've felt... and I'm still not quite where I want to be. I never considered myself as a particularily good producer. |
