Hardly mighty.

what have england ever won in recent footballing history?
Dj Smitty20
I'm talking about recent times as in the last 40 years. Before 1950, England were without question the biggest footballing nation but out of their own arrogance, did not compete in the World Cup. One of the winning Italian sides from the 30s was beaten by England 8 nil a few months after the World Cup. At least one or two of those early World Cups would have been England's had they participated before the rest of the world caught up.

Anyway it doesn't matter. This current generation are a bunch of overpaid chokers.

Agree 100%. I was born in England, so the team will always have my support, but wow, the current crop and the manager are utterly useless. It's a strange sensation actually, imagining a tournament without England, but I guess it could be good for safety (less hooligans in Switzerland/Austria) and none of the silly drama all over the media every single time England is eliminated from any tournament. This might actually give the team the required wake-up call to perform at the level at which they're actually capable of producing, and indicate to the FA that they need to bring in a proper manager.

And btw, I'm in Waterloo too (Weber & Albert). What about you?
Dj Smitty20
I'm on Weber too but only just a few blocks north of Bridgeport, not far from my first (AWESOME) apartment I had when I moved here September 2006. I'm only here until the Spring and then back to London once I finally get this ing thesis finished and graduate with my MA. I could be back for my PhD in a year or two though...it's a nice town.

But I agree with you except about that hooligan thing. There is trouble from a lot of fans these days, not just English. English fans are often unfairly targeted by other nation's hooligans and local police because of their reputation from the 1980s which is a bit unfair. I remember when I saw an England-Germany game in Detroit in 1993...I was only a kid but my dad had to fend off crazy German fans and my 70 year old Grandpa at the time knocked one of them out...all because we had England stuff on. It's quite stupid if you ask me.

But yeah, the FA needs to clean house and establish a proper Academy system. Of course, none of this will be possible when foreign managers (like Sven) continue to bring in foreign talent into the English League. England is too big a footballing nation to flounder like this...in my opinion, it's not good for the game.

My my my, what an exciting end to the Euro qualifications we have on our hands. Scotland losing today will be a boost and bit of relief for Italy as now we can accept a draw but a loss can send us packing.

Scotland has to win to keep dreams alive as France will easily win their last game unless something disastrous happens, which i really hope does happen :disbelief.

England was a shock, im happy with the result though.

Pretty much all of the other big teams are through the only remaining are Italy, England, and maybe Portugal.

Who cares if england were the mightiest footballing side pre war. That was in decades ago. In the here and now, england aren't that good. And the sooner your supporters realise that the better for everyone.

As for football that really matters. Group B is shaping up to be a fantastic finish. Isn't it just like us scots to bottle it against the smaller nation. It's going to be quite a day of football at hampden when italy come to call. As a fan of italian football I'm left torn as to what I want from the game. Seeing scotland and their fans return to tournament football would be really special and great for the game in this country, but loosing the world champions because of it would detract from the spectacle of the euro championships I feel.

Whatever the result I know I'm going to take it tight for being a half tally in glasgow. :D Can't in wait but.

honestly dude what the have Scotland ever won? You sound like my roomate harping on about non-existent Scottish glory in the ever present English shadow. Face it...England dominates you in everything, history and sports included.

Besides, Scotland lost 2 nil to ing Georgia. You have no right to even be arguing anything in here. They aren't going to qualify.

A nation of 5 million can hardly be expected to compete against such might now can we?

Besided with my dad being italian I tend to follow the azzuri when i watch international football anyway as my previous posts on here will tell you (see world cup 2006 thread). Now lets see what have we won. just the 4 world cups.. :)

Dj Smitty20
^^^^ so basically you cop out and take the side of either Scotland or Italy whenever it suits you?

Italy certainly are talented...but how you don't feel embarrassed in which the way Italy won their last World Cup is beyond me.
fcuk ®
Embarresing? No, not at all. I think we quiet rightly deserved to win the World cup considering of all the past luck we have had in WC history and the scandals that rocked our league just before the WC started. We put on brave faces and played with heart in all our games.

Out of all the games we played one little thing goes wrong and what everyone thinks we didn't deserve to win? Get the out of here. Btw did you see how France got to the final? A blatent dive from Henry that gave them a 1-0 win from penalty spot.

What happened in the 2002 World Cup against South Korea really was a load of bull and pissed us off, it then eventually happened to Spain. Imagine if it were ENGLAND? im sure you would be pretty pissed. Now you understand why we were so happy about winning 2006 World Cup.
