What would you guys say is the best audio recorder on the market right now?

Plug in and record right out of a mixer using RCAs or an RCA adapter would be what im looking for.

m-audio makes a fairly decent protable recorder.

if you need better than that i would say you are looking at getting into some serious pro-level gear

For the longest time i've been using Sony MD, but it breaks down a lot due to many moving parts... :(

The MicroTrack is definitely what you want. I'll be getting one soon myself...

The Sony MD doesn't let you transfer music back to your PC though. That's incredibly limiting when you're recording livesets which are not copyrighted!

the iriver is great - the bigger, portable hard drive ones record simply with a cable connection. those are a bit more expensive. The smaller "jukbox" models have line in capability but you need a docking station to record. These are about 40US and are available from the iriveramerica website.

id avoid MD beacuse they break and the compression sounds ugly

This is by far the best product that I have seen in years. 24bit, uses flash memory, M-Audio quality. If I had the need I would get one of these hands down.

When you are buying memory, it will get a bit tricky. Prices are holding steady right now and not dropping too quickly. There will be a point in time soon where the price will drop dramtically and then level off again. I would suggest waiting to buy a really big compact flash card.

A 2gig will cost you as little as $60 right now.

M-Audio, M-Transit.

It's not a recorder, but it converts analog to digital sound, and transmits it through USB so it can be recorded on any computer/laptop(using ANY recording software) or audio device. There's no signal loss when its digital through the USB (obviously) so long runs of usb cable dont hurt.

It also can be used for 'live broadcast' type situations because it plays realtime through USB.

I've had mine for about a year, and I always keep it with me when I travel with gear. Its never acted up, and is VERY simple to use.

Micro track 24/96 is USD 499.95 MSRP ahhhhhhhhhh:eek: I was thinking of getting a DVD-R recorder that looks like a DVD player but it records onto DVD's and CD's!

you think this is a wise move?
