So Then What Makes a Good Mix?

I've heard time and time again arguements about certain DJs having a "Great Mix", or doing a "ty mix".

But then, what the hell does that mean?

Other than the bare bones, such as Beatmatching, Phrase Matching, and getting the right key, what's good mixing?

Time and time again i've heard EDM people say "oh this mix is great, this DJ is great, or this DJ is , this DJ can't mix", yet 99% of the time the people telling me this have never touched a channel fader in their lives.

I've often heard a basic transition or a mix with many basic transitions from one track to another get called "good", when this can be done just buy moving one fader (the cross fader), from one side to another with little planning. Sure it sounds good, but is that all mixing is?

Maybe it's the ability to just move the crowd. But then, Tiesto moves a crowd like crazy at times, and keeps emotion straight throughout his mixes but everyone agrees that he may so basic mistakes (not forgivable IMO). Does that mean he did a great mix, even if the tracks sounded odd during transition because he's started to mix them very close together (like in ISOS5) (even though this sounds great at times)?

I've heard so many times a great transition go completely overlooked by ppl, who don't know the first thing about DJing, and don't know what takes more skill than what. This is especially the case for people who aren't really into the scene (and the internet).

SO is it just the ability to make a transition sound good? If that's the case then some very basic transitions can be labelled "great". But if a mix is techinally excellent and very smooth, but is too boring or standard for a person, is it bad?

For me personally, i think a mix has to be taken in context. different mixes can change the feeling of a crowd in different ways, and for me depending on the feeling i want to move towards, i change accordingly.

But when 90% of you don't know what phrase matching is, what's a good mix to you?

#1 rule.

Track selection.

The fundamental feature of any mix is programming. Technicalities aside, if the programming is then no amount of deck wizadry can cover it up.

exactly what these two people said. you need good track selection, good transitions and good flow. DJ Tiesto for example: ty track selections, VERY mediocre transitions and shabby flow

100% agree, a good mix is the art of programming.

I wouldn't neccessarily say he's always been this way though. His down hill was after ISOS 3 but ISOS 3 had excellent flow, excellent track selection and farily good transitions (he's never been perfect in that area but was better than he is now). But definitely all those things are important...

I would have to say good mixing (meaning don't up, as long as the transition sounds good it doesn't matter to me) and a good track selection.

Go take a look at Oakenfolds 94 Goa mix. That is a perfect example of a awesome dj set (to bad not much people mix ambient stuff with goa, psy or regular trance any more).
