KKK to protest Iraq war
04/07/2006 08:35 - (SA)

Gettysburg - The National Park Service has granted the Ku Klux Klan's request to hold a rally and protest the Iraq war at the Civil War battlefield where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.

Gordon Young of the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan obtained the permit on Wednesday for about 100 people to participate in a September 2 event at Gettysburg national military park.

The purpose will be to demonstrate opposition to the Iraq war and to speak on "white unity between the north and south," the permit said.

Free speech and assembly

Park superintendent John A Latschar said in a statement on Monday that the permit was granted in light of rights to free speech and assembly.

More than 51 000 soldiers were killed, injured, captured or went missing in the three-day battle that ended July 3, 1863, according to the National Park Service. The union victory is considered a major turning point in the war.

Lincoln delivered his address in November 1863 at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg.

Young's group and other white supremacist organisations held a similar event last month at Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland.

i can feel a Leno joke coming on:

Did you hear about this? The KKK is going to protest against the War in Iraq. THE KKK.

Think about this, how misguided does the war in Iraq have to be for the KKK to object?

lol

I wonder if Dave Chappel will be there "Whiate Poawah"

I kinda fail to understand their rationale behind the protest. I mean, most of the US troops are black or latino (especially the lower-ranked cannon fodder) and they're fighting the brownish skinned arabs. From their point of view, it should be the next best thing to blacks fighting blacks...

Well...not exactly. I guess it depends on how you define "most."

The US Military has a high proportion of blacks, but a lower proportion of Hispanics.

My impression was pretty much from what I've seen on TV, so I suppose I might have been wrong at it. I still don't see the rationale behind their points, though, because as long as you proportionally kill more blacks than whites that should be a step towards a racially more uniform society. But maybe they're protesting because they don't think there's enough hispanics dying :conf:

I agree with you there. I don't understand what their "deal" is. Although I'm not sure if there's really a logical explaination behind a group that hates blacks, Jews, Catholics, etc...with no real "logic" there either.

Did anyone see that A&E documentary about the white supremacists? They showed a KKK rally and there was only about 30 people there. :haha:

I'm not trying to change the subject here (well, maybe), but one of the more interesting things on racism I've seen recently was on European racism towards minority football (soccer) players. I didn't realize racsim was as public and prevelant as it was in the footage I saw. They used Henry of France as an example, but also showed some other players being called different names as well. I can't imagine a group of fans chanting the "N" word or "monkey" in the United States, but it seems that happens in football stadiums in Europe to some degree. America has racism and racist people, don't get me wrong, but I guess it's not nearly as publically tolerated as it is in Europe.

^^ I've noticed that too. Pretty sad and pathetic.

its worse in some places than others..Spain for example..one of the Barcalona players, Et'o from Cameroon, had to be talked out of walking off the pitch after being abused all game by the home fans.

it even happened in an international game in Spain when England played there..you could quie clearly her the monkey chants throughout the game when some of Englands black players got the ball.

Some of the Ultras in Italy are very far right as well..Lazio of Rome for example...i beleive they have a statue of Mussolini outside the stadium (i might be wrong about this, but im sure i heard something like this) there is also facist slogans and banners on show

quite sad really.i have no time for racism or racists.
