MP3 Encoding @ 410KBPS

So I have been hearing rumours. Is this true, are there encoders out there which can handle this?

I've heard rumours of a bitrate of 1.048.576 kb/s mp3's.

Apparently the quality of the sound improves tenfold compared to the wav file it's based on.

Perfecting VBR should be the top priority for mp3.

I have heard mixed reviews about VBR. Personally I think it sounds ok.

Wikipedia has some decent info on this. It says there that you can get up to 640kbps with LAME.

I don't know much about this, the LAME encoder is available as a standalone app but when I checked it out it wasn't very clear how to set it up. When it's integrated into apps I think it only goes to 320. Maybe someone else can point you in the direction of an easy to set up standalone. I think best quality VBR is decent enough for the moment though and even if you get a 640 encoder, I'm not sure what media players support it.

Or super-fast internet connections and lossless or no compression.
