I'd like to hear more opinions of Quebecers in this thread.
The problem is that French speakers are a small minority of the countrys population and most people who havent even been to the real Quebec (ie not Montreal) not to mention have never lived there, have biased opinions fed to them by the mainstream media. Bill 101 and the entire separatist movement could have easily been prevented if anglos in Montreal hadn't acquired so much power which was extremely unproportional and unfair.
Remember the biggest players in the separatist movement were originally high ranking members of the CANADIAN Liberal Party!
And the bilingualism argument pisses me off. The whole point of the law was to preserve French culture not demolish it.

most people dont even realize that lucien bouchard was a liberal at one time.English is spoken by almost everyone in montreal, but leave the island and you will be hard pressed to find those that do.I am not for seperatism, but i think the french have every right to protect their heritage.Imagine the 5% of french speaking torontonians controlling the 95% of english ones for decades.I think that if that was the case, similar language policing would exist there too;) |

If Iran didn't talk about Nukes it would get 5 minutes of time on the world stage.
Quebec gets plenty of time on the canadian stage (just for laughs, cirque de soleil, Celine Dion etc.) Their use of the "language" card effectively doubles their time on the canadian stage.
While both culture and language are real things, Quebec's use of the "language" card is as genuine as the Iranians use of the "nuke" card.
Notwithstanding bill 101 is the best named bill ever :) |

Je peux parler français super bon!
There are two basic stages where performances are held. Locally and on a super stage (formed of multiple local groups). Ottawa gets a free pass to the canadian stage. Everyone else has to do something to get on there.
Canadians are the world's leading professionals in the use of the stage. The easiest proof of this is to think of when was the last time a canadian mayor was on the world stage? Think Torino olympics |

I speak and write French fluently, in fact when I am surrounded by french speakers or culture I start to think in French :)
I am from Quebec, and as a Montrealer I love the bilingualism! I've been fortunate to speak both languages since I was capable of speaking. I lived in Montreal for 26 years. Most people I know feel so fortunate to be bilingual, and really embrace the European feel that Montreal has.
If the signs don't bother Quebecers, then why should they bother you. Not only that, read this excerpt:
The OLF is also puzzled about Mount Royal's decision to paint over the English words. It thinks the city overacted. "They could have erected these signs in both French and in English as long as the French is predominating," said OLF spokesman Gerald Paquette.
Doesn't that mean the signs can be in both languages?! |

And to be honest, I could really care less.
Does anyone actually read the little "Rd." or "Rue" on a street sign anyways? If I'm following directions to get somewhere in TMR, will my decision really be based on the prefix that follows the street name to guide me?
No.
Who cares, get over it.
This is just an uproar by the English media over something completely insignificant. The only reason the mayor didn't fight it is because the legal costs and headaches associated with the fight did not compare to the cost of just blackening out the english section.

Ive been to France twice...
There are bilingual signs everywhere. Stop signs say STOP, not an "arret" to be seen anywhere. And KFC (kentucky friend chicken)
is actually called KFC, not PFK!! (poulet frit kentucky)
Is france americanized?

Id say that france is still pretty french to me.
The quebec sign law is born of nothing more than a radical sense of self conciousnous. It is inexcusible for ANY government to be dictating what language should be where. |
