I want to buy studio monitors instead of pc speakers for music production and DJ'ing...Is it possible to connect the monitors into the pc without some other intermediary hardware?
Subtle
yes..

but its recommended to use a mixer to control the soundvolume..

ah yeah i didnt think about that...just route my turntables and mixer into my pc for recording and back into the mixer through the speaker output on the soundcard then just plug the monitors into the mixer output...makes sense right?
optik
that's the way to do it.

bluesky media desktop is what you want in terms of monitors; they do have a level control on the back of the sub

i have an extern firewire audiophile soundcard and my krk's are plugged into the card, i control volume with the soundcard :), works fine, but gonna buy a nice mixer anyway soon, handy for other purposes as well

Or split the output. One goes to speakers, one goes directly into the sound card.

i have some event tr8s and they are ing awesome. but you can get some alesis m1 actives for cheaper. m1 actives are kick ass value for money. in terms of connecting them to the pc, your best bet is to get a basic firewire sound device, most of them will come with a master volume control. its a bit annoying for me at the mo because i have to control my monitor level using the software that my sound device came with (m audio delta 1010). but if you get one of the "all in one" firewire cards you wont have that problem..

get bluesky media desk - so much better than the budget stuff above.

They are a fair bit more expensive.. and bearing in mind the considerations so far are alesis or event monitors i expect thats a bit more money than the guy woulda liked to have spent. event monitors are not by any means budget.

I agree mike - btw ing loved love theme dusk matey, in my top ten of the best tracks I've heard since 1999

they are more expensive, but if you look carefully you can get a set for about £399 - I guess that is twice the money of the alesis ones, but at least you won't need to upgrade for a while, and when we get into producing for 5.1 it's a relatively cheap upgrade.

I found the accuracy of the blueskys to be a lot better and worth the extra £200 - which on some weekends is a couple of nights out ;)

blueskys are about the same as tr8's in terms of price - the tr8's sound pretty damned nice to me as well; it would be a close thing between them and the bluesky if I were buying them now
