What follows is the opinion of RJT and RJT alone.
New > Old
No question about it. I hate the old movie, absolutely cannot stand it. It's visually irritating to me, and as a HUGE fan of the works of Roald Dahl, I found it exceptionally disappointing that the vivid imagery I came up with in my head while reading his books was so poorly brought to life by Mel Stuart - Especially on the part of Gene Wilder, an actor who I'll openly admit I just cannot stand.
Burton absolutely nails the vision I had in my head while reading Dahl books as a child - Dahl was a dark writer for a childrens novelist, and though his stories often dealt with the fantastic, they also almost always had some kind of dark character or subject matter that I don't think came through at all in the original. The casting is brilliant, and Depp's ability to play the ever insecure and always honest Wonka far outshines the almost saccharine nature of Wilder & Stuart's first attempt.
Thoughts?

I cant decide; I think I will have to have a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory marathon, and then pick.
I reallllllllllly liked the new one though. |

The newest one was way better, but the old one is funny for the daft songs.
Just a pity it had to be americanised. And the kid that played Charlie was one annoying ******. |

I'm a sucker for any movie that Gene Wilder is in.
As well as johnny depp.
I liked both! |

| New oompa loompas>old oompa loompas. Those green/orange things were beyond creepy. |

Burton just HAD to throw in the back story of why Willy Wonka became a candy man...typical of him in that lots of his movies deal with a character who struggles to find his place in the world, and the whole father/son turmoil. I thought it was unnecessary. There were also some other minor tweaks that I thought took away from the story, and missed the whole point of Dahl's message.
A big meh to the new flick, though it was visually very pleasing.
I like Roald Dahl a lot too...The Twits is great! |
