I'm shocked..
I'm guessing they gave the award to Zidane only because he is retiring and FIFA wants him to be remembered going out with some diginity, rather than possibly the one who lost control in the biggest match. |

The vote was in before the red card, so it didn't have anything to do with it.

His successful seventh minute penalty for France against Italy meant he became the fourth player to score three goals in the history of the showpiece final.
But his sending off in the 111th minute meant he also became only the fourth player to be sent off in a World Cup final.
Zidane's early spot kick added to the two headed goals the French playmaker scored in the 3-0 win over Brazil in the 1998 final on home soil in Paris.
Zidane also scored in France's second-round 3-1 victory over Spain and he netted from the penalty spot in their 1-0 semi-final victory over Portugal.
To cap a vintage World Cup - until the final itself - Zidane, 34, set up Thierry Henry's winner in the 1-0 victory over champions Brazil in the quarter-finals.
The final was Zidane's last competitive match.

actually that media story is wrong and if you search you may find the one that says this is untrue. There was a big hoopla over the casting being open after the finale so they can take that into account....unless cheeky Blatter changed it as only he could:stongue:

If it was given after the end of the game it's completely wrong as Zidane shown a huge lack of fair play, and there were other 2 great candidates who did a good final. If it was given before the red card, it's also completely wrong since it was supposed to be given after the final, after what happened the last 2 world cups:
2002: Kahn gets the award before the final, s up massively in the final, Ronaldo scores 2 in it and should have got the award
1998: Ronaldo gets the award before the final, but has strange convulsions before entering the pitch and played poor. Zidane scores 2 in it and should have got the award.
Either way, FIFA are muppets. |
