Media: Russia saves the day!

Basayev, 41, claimed responsibility for some of Russia’s worst terror attacks, including the seizure of some 800 hostages in a Moscow theater in 2002, the 2004 school hostage taking in Beslan that killed 331, and the seizure of about 1,000 hostages at a hospital in Budyonnovsk that killed about 100.
Patrushev told Putin that the Chechen rebels had hoped to “put political pressure on the Russian leadership” during the Group of Eight summit later this week, which Putin is chairing.
Putin called Basayev’s killing “deserved retribution” for terrorist attacks in Beslan and Budyonnovsk, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
The attack on the Beslan school shocked Russia and divided the rebel movement, since civilians, including women and children, were taken hostage.
Patrushev said that the operation to eliminate Basayev, in which many other rebels were killed, was “thanks to the operative position abroad, especially in those countries where arms were collected.”
Rebel-connected Web sites did not immediately comment on Patrushev’s claim. |

I think this is an end of an era in chechnya. They have a pro-russia leader that is going to take office shortly, and now this. They've lost over 100,000 of their own people thanks to the russians. I hope they don't just give up after more than 10 years of fighting. |

| Regardless of what we all may think about russian actions in Chechnya, Basayev was a terrorist and a radical islamist who attacked and killed school childern. I really don't see why you should feel bad about him going. If it were up to him, Chechnya would look like Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. |

i came to US when i was 13, right now I'm 18
if i stayed there, i would be in chechnya right now, or serving in ingushetia
a lot of people died there, i hope they did not die for nothing |

Its very sad to see 100,000 people die for a lost cause...
But its a relief that something like the Beslan incident has less of a chance of happening again (am i right in thinking that it was Basayev's doing?) |

Basayev got what he deserved, though the biggest irony is that Russians did not kill him, so it seems. It appears that they may have accidentaly blown themselves up.
I can see it now: "No, Ahmet, no!!!! don't light that maatch near explosives! DON.....!!!!!" KAAAABOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!
