shopping for DJ monitors (speakers)

I'm updating the setup for my DJ booth, includinga custom-home-made DJ desk, and I will be adding stands for DJ monitors..
So I've gotta decide on a pair that will satisfy the demands that we all know.
Now, I've seen others here use KRK rokits and others use passive home-theatre tower speakers.
Ideally I wanna spend $200 or less on either passive or active speakers for the booth, and I can't have them any bigger that a studio monitor or bookshelf size, as the stands will fit those.
I'm not entirely heading for audio quality right away, because I keep my better monitors in my production rig... ie: I won't put a $1500/pair Mackie hr824s in front of my DJ rig.
I've also done some shopping already and found the M-Audio StudioPro 3. But I fear it's size takes away from it's punch & bass response.
Could any of you suggest based on what you have? |

| Well I have my HR 824's hooked up to my Empath, and it sounds soooo good! But on a budget of $200, you don't have much of a selection and probably not something you would want to own anyways. You won't be happy with the sound at all. What mixer are you using? |

the Behringer Truth monitors are supposed to be surprisingly good for the price!
Or look for some used monitors. |

Eeeks $200 isn't a lot, I bought the KRK RP-5's which are $150 a piece.
I added the RP-10 subwoofer later.

| I got the 5" Rokit monitors as well. I am completely happy w/ how they sound for that price. Save up a little more and then decide on something. |

Yea I did notice the Alesis 520s... would be a good choice... I just gotta save up some more.
The Rokit 5s... do they have enough bass from the small woofers?
..how about the Alesis 520s? |

| I bought the M-Audio BX-8's for $300 new when they were being discontinued. They can get good and loud and u might be able to find them used for $200ish |

I just recently bought the KRK V4's...I have'nt seen a lot of folks with those on here, but I compared them side by side to the RP5's...and even though theyre smaller, the quality is so so worth it, it really blows the RP5's away. You can really feel the kick even if they're at half volume.
I know you may not wanna fork out around 500 for some monitors. But I'm learning something I should have learned Alooooooong time ago...
You get what you pay for
Higher Cost = ing Quality = Soooo worth it!!! |
